GET IN HIGH Lp by SOUL CARAVAN production by FRITZ RAU and HORST LIPPMANN recording by TORSTEN WINTERMEIER. Original German 1st pressing on CBS label (S 63268), from 1967. Killer debut release by this cult group from the German underground and important (early) entry for the soon-to-come Krautrock genre. An intoxicating mix of vocal soul and seriously funky R&B with psychedelic jazz and rock undercurrent. Just a couple of years later, the same group would be part of the counter-culture upheaval in Germany, change their name to the more recognisable Xhol Caravan and record Electrip for the Hansa label. For the Get In High session, Soul Caravan featured the lead vocals of 2 Amercian GIs albeit themes like MEMORIES has the voice of funky drummer, Skip Van Wyck. Every track is superb but for us the killer experimental soul of GET IN HIGH SHOTGUN is the composition that clearly indicates certain progressive elements of the group's future sound... Heavy boogaloo soul with mystical spoken word rap / weird worldless chanting / rhythmically stunning free jazz horns / tape manipulation and strange electronic shockwaves from Werner Funk's guitar that all kick in mid-way. Their PSYCHEDELIC SOUL theme is also very progressive with middle eastern psych motifs throughout. Several big trax for DJs on here so we have recorded most of the Lp ;) Crossover appeal for exotic funk / mod / new breed and more leftfield northern soul collectors. We've tried to be as eclectic as possible in highlighting the varied moods and sounds of this group so our soundclip opens with the rawkus drum skills and tittyshaker sax of BOOKIN' UP followed by the psychedelic masterpiece GET IN HIGH SHOTGUN (with trippy guitar intro) / HEY HEY HEY WHAT'S THIS YOU'RE DOIN' BABY (with drum break intro) / the bossa jazz beat and west coast psych vocals of MEMORIES / the funky SO MUCH SOUL / PSYCHEDELIC SOUL and other amazing themes. Totally destroys Lamia Soul Time by The Kadri Six / Dee Dee, Barry & The Movements and anything else from the German '60s soul scene. James Brown influences / deep funk basslines / insane drum skills and fantastic rhythms galore. The incredible horn section of Hansi Fischer and Tim Belbe cut from groovy and funky movements to modal and freestyle blowing. The last track on our soundclip is a lowrider style version of LAND OF 1000 DANCES with impressive sweet soul harmony. The back sleeve liner notes says it all really... "It's not just soul music, it's music of the soul, gettin' a little higher, gettin' a little freer... Integrating the sounds of our time...". Booming production by Rau + Lippmann. Vinyl is in shiny, VG++ condition overall regardless of some sections of hairlines and faint scuffs. Light surface noises. Booming production sound. A couple of audible distortions in the higher register during intro of "African Song" and a few soft pops / soft ticks in other places (as you can hear on our soundclip). The laminated card sleeve is in VG++ condition overall regardless of light wear from storage and natural age discoloration to outer edges of back sleeve. Some ring wear / ring creasing (front sleeve). A few small laminate crease lines down the spine side (front sleeve). A touch of laminate lifting to the bottom edge beside the spine side corner (front sleeve). Corner wear with some laminate chipping. Mini ding to top right corner of back sleeve). Still a sharp looking item. Camera flash glare to sleeve and label photo. Very rare Lp!!!
