Acquired from a former Source Family member in Los Angeles, this copy has direct lineage to the original circle that created and distributed these records.
YA HO WA 13 WERE FORMED IN 1969 IN THE LOS ANGELES AREA BY ONE OF THE MOST ECCENTRIC FREAKS OF THE TIME, A MIDDLE-AGED BEATNIK CALLED JIM BAKER WHO BELIEVED HIMSELF A GOD AND WENT BY THE NICKNAME OF FATHER YOD. THEIR EXTREME PSYCHEDELIC SOUND, THAT EMPLOYED TRIBAL DRUMS AND DISTORTED GUITARS IN A DELIBERATELY CHILDISH MANNER (ALL UNREHEARSED LIVE AND WITH NO OVERDUBS, EDITING OR DESIGN), WAS THE ULTIMATE PRODUCT OF THE HIPPIE ERA.
Recorded by members of the Source Family commune in Los Angeles under the direction of Father Yod (Jim Baker), this private-press psych LP was distributed only within the group - making original copies extremely rare today.
Every track here was fully improvised and recorded live to tape. It’s hypnotic, heavy, and spiritual -equal parts chaos and cosmic meditation. The guitars drone, drums pound like ritual chants, and Father Yod’s primal vocals float in and out of the mix. There’s nothing quite like this record in the psych underground.
