Well before their score for the unrivalled feature-length anime Akira, Tokyo collective Genioh Yamashirogumi were making often unheard marvels, of the kind the world simply wasn't and still isn't ready for. Composer and anthropologist Tsutomu Oohashi applied what he'd learned in the latter career to forge a kind of membership structure as manifesto: to this day, as then, GY's members number in the hundreds, mostly amateurs trained specifically for each project - so less a band, more a sonographic research institute. 1986's Ecophony Rinne sits early in that trajectory, outlaying Oohashi's notion of "ecological music", where ancient ritual forms and emerging digital tools coexist. From the reverse-effected chorals of 'Falling As Flowers Do - Dying A Glorious Death' to the closing apophony 'Reincarnation', we hear entire legacies of Japanese traditional music folded through, though the record also chimes contemporarily with many of the blockbuster spiritual-epic film scores of the 80s.
