Yayo El Indio was the professional name of the prominent singer, whose real name was Gabriel Vega Eladio Peguero. He was born on March 18, 1920 in the town of Juana Diaz, south of Puerto Rico; son of a Dominican father and Puerto Rican mother. When he was six, his family moved to live in Santo Domingo, but Yayo returned at 16 years. According to Cristobal Diaz Ayala takes his stage name from "Yayo" by his grandfather and "Indian" in memory of his grandmother's race. Although as a child he suffered from stuttering became impeccable singer and was one of the most prolific showgirls of the salsa boom of the late seventies.
