This short-lived YEAR ONE crew produced only this one album and vanished without a trace, but what they created is an effective mix of hard rock, progressive, folk, and psychedelic elements. Overall, it's an enjoyable album with a few rough patches. One of the lead vocalist sounds like Gentle Giant's Derek Shulman; One might go so far as to say this album sounds like what you might imagine if early Uriah Heep got together with Gentle Giant and mixed their sound into one unit. Album highlight tracks include: "E=MC-2" The band uses a combination of reeds and synthesizer to make up one half of this initially bouncy work, but abruptly a gentle acoustic guitar and sweet steel guitar with pleasant vocals takes over... "Morning Lights" Beautiful acoustic guitar and harmonies make for a lovely, folk-prog like listening experience... "Jubilation" starts sparse with only percussion to fill the void at first, soon enough the song becomes more akin to 1960s folk rock, but features some sizzling lead guitar work. Adding variety is a sprightly whirling flute solo.... "Your Love, My Love" Again the acoustic guitar is the main instrument. The vocals range from calm passages to high end-octaves but keeps things mostly tranquil thanks to the fluttering woodwind- a highlight performance. ..."Juggle" A swampier feel is made by muffling the guitar and bass and adding some quivering keyboard. If there were a song on this album to really appeal to Gentle Giant fanatics, this would be it.... "Transitory River" opens with soft electric keys, working through mostly major and diminished chords make up this quieter piece. Even though it is soft, it seems to be one of the best tracks on the record, reminiscent of parts of the Gentle Giant album 'Three Friends' ... where as "Flood" features a gritty guitar riff kicking it off, and lays the foundation for woodwinds and bass solos, two instruments that almost seem to be competing with each other. ..."Year One" The title track begins with classic guitar and soft singing. As it adopts a fuller sound, it also introduces a theatric, deep voice similar to "Genetic Control" from Genesis's "Get 'Em Out by Friday." The music ceases for a moment, and then brings in falsetto vocals and raunchy raw reeds and guitar - not at all smooth like other tracks, showcasing the albums varied instrumentations...."We Look Out at You" may remind some of The Who both in sound and structure, but adds texture with a distant organ. The guitar solo works over a steady bass pounding out the same note....then "Rock 'N' Roll Nights" as the name might suggest, is a rock and roll - progressive ELP mixed with hard-rocking Blue Oyster Cult but better than any early Blue Oyster Cult track in the same! ... "Above You" Electric piano and acoustic guitar make up the bulk of this short song that includes West Coast like harmonies and some southern rock grit. ..flowing outward with "True My Lord" is an acoustic rock tune sounding a great deal like early Neil Young which would appeal to many....

Grading:
All records are visually graded unless otherwise noted.
Please note that many imperceptible factors can degrade the sound of a record, including pressing defects, vinyl quality, recording techniques, dust, and mastering, among others.
Please be aware that it is possible that an item will not play at the standard to which it was graded for the above or other reasons. We do our best to grade fairly and accurately and appreciate your understanding of factors beyond our control and observational skills.
Our grading system is based on the Goldmine Standard, and is as follows:
SS (Still Sealed) – Unopened, unplayed brand new LPs in their original factory shrink wrap. These records are generally presumed to be mint, but that may not always be the case due to manufacturing defects, sleeve scuffing and minor warping. For these reasons we are unable to guarantee the condition of the record inside and sealed records are non-returnable if opened.
M (Mint) – A perfect and seemingly unplayed record. This is the highest grade we will give a record that is not sealed and we use it rarely.
NM (Near Mint) – A like-new record with only the slightest evidence that it has ever been played or handled.
EX (Excellent) – Close to like-new with only very minor indicators of use that will not affect playback. EX records should satisfy all but the most critically demanding audiophiles. Covers will be very sharp with only slight imperfections.
VG+ (Very Good Plus) – Used but well-taken care-of records that will exhibit only minor defects. VG+ records may show signs of wear including, but not limited to scuffing, minor scratches, slight warps, spindle marks, light ring wear, cutouts or other markings, and minor seam wear on covers and labels. VG+ records are great copies for all but the most discerning listeners.
VG (Very Good) – Average, well-used records that still sound good enough for the majority of listeners to enjoy. These records will usually play with some surface noise from scratches, scuffs, and groove wear. They may lack the gloss of cleaner, factory-fresh records and can have scratches and visible groove wear. Covers will show conisderable signs of handling or storage, and may have writing, tears, seam splits and other wear.
Good -- These records are not trashed, but will play back with considerable noise due to serious wear and scratches. They should not skip, but this may depend on turntable setup. Covers in this condition may show heavy wear but are not trashed. Tape, fully split seams, heavy writing and tears are common.
Fair & Poor -- These are basically "play-at-your-own-risk" which are in very rough condition all around and have been neglected or abused.
We may amend a grade with a plus (+) or minus (-) indicating that the record is slightly better or worse than one of the standard grades but we do not use multiple plus or minus signs.
For example, a record that is somewhere between the two grades could be EX+ or NM- depending on which grade more accurately represents the perceived condition.
