Description
Yes’s landmark and magnificent fifth album Close To The Edge. This was the one that shot them to real Supergroup status. This is the EARLIEST FIRST UK PRESSING WITH A1 / B1 matrices and TEXTURED sleeve. The album opens with the title track that spans the whole of side one. The production on this record is nothing short of phenomenal. Just as you’re being seduced gently by the ambient keyboards and birdsong swirling around the speakers, suddenly, it all kicks off !! Powered by Chris Squire’s mountainous bass lines and Steve Howe’s frantic guitar, ‘The Solid Time Of change’, is the first of four ‘parts’ that make up side one. Continuing with the melody and groove of ‘Total Mass Retain,’ it leads into the beautiful, ‘I Get Up, I Get Down’. Here we’re back into the same ambient mood as the opening but with a tune from Heaven ! The vocal harmonies of this part are nothing short of Angelic ! Rick Wakeman compliments this with a stirring Church organ piece that takes us into the final part ‘Seasons Of Man’. Again, wonderfully melodic and with spine tingling harmonies, it returns to the swirling opening music and birdsong. Utterly, brilliant !!
Side two has more of the same, with the uplifting and epic, ‘And You and I’ and the live favourite, the gloriously melodic and stomping, ‘Siberian Khatru’, confirming that Yes could ROCK !!
The Vinyl is in near mint condition with ABSOLUTELY NO discernible marks. The audio is stunningly clear and powerful from this EARLIEST FIRST UK pressing. There is absolutely NO DISTORTION from groove wear. The labels do not carry the “WB’ logo as on later pressings and have barely any spindle marks. In fact, there is only one mark where it looks like the previous owner just missed the spindle ! There is a smaller mark on the other side. Thats it !! Matrices are A1 and B1. I would grade this as nothing less than NEAR MINT.
The TEXTURED sleeve is in EXCELLENT- condition with some light scuffs. The original green inner sleeve with printed lyrics and credits has a split to the top and a little edge wear and also grades EX-.
All in all, a rare and great chance to own what is a truly SUPERB piece of vinyl. I have never seen or heard a better copy of this record !!
