ALBUM INFO:

Close To The Edge is the fifth studio album by Yes. The album was recorded between April and June 1972, and was released later that same year in September. According to co-composer Jon Anderson, the title track is inspired by Hermann Hesse’s book Siddhartha. The song tracks the awakening of Hesse's character “close to the edge" of a river where he experiences a spiritual awakening. Bruford says in his autobiography that he came up with the title to describe the state of the band itself, as he had with its predecessor Fragile; he left the line-up after completion of the recording in order to play with King Crimson.

The spiritual influences introduced by Jon Anderson are already evident in the music and lyrics of all three tracks on Close To The Edge. Renewal and repetition are other main themes; the title track starts and finishes with the same sound effects of running water and birds, and in ‘Siberian Khatru’ there is the repetition of two-syllable words and phrases. This came up many times later in songs like ‘The Revealing Science of God’, ‘Going for the One’, ‘To Be Over’, and ‘Rhythm of Love’. This album set a trend for Yes for structuring an album around a single epic song. Here the centerpiece is the song ‘Close To The Edge’. Later Yes albums that follow this pattern are Relayer, Going For The One,  Talk and Fly From Here.

The cover art was by Roger Dean. Some of the photography for the album sleeve was by bass player Chris Squire's former bandmate in the Selfs and The Syn, Martyn Adelman.

PRODUCTION:

VINYL:

(MINT)

COVER/GATEFOLD:

(EX+) The gatefold sleeve is made of extra thick card, so is sturdier than the average LP sleeve. Both the front and back has a little minor wear, and the only crease visible is to the bottom left hand corner to the back. The gatefold - as with the front and back - has some very minor wear. The OBI strip has a small crease to the front and a very small tear to the bottom - I cannot describe enough how minor the tear is. This LP sleeve is in excellent condition and is free from any damage such as tears, writing or sticker marks.

EDGES/SPINE:

The spine has a few crease marks due to the opening of the sleeve; there is also a little wear mainly to the corners; overall in excellent condition with no damage.

INNER SLEEVE:

(EX+) The inner sleeve displays the English lyrics to the album tracks, and is in excellent condition with no damage such as splits or tears.

INSERT:

(EX) The insert displays the Japanese lyrics to the album tracks; there is some minor wear to the insert however no damage.

LABELS:

Neither or the labels have any damage or writing, however they do have a couple of light brown spots.

AUDIO GRADING:

I play all LP's on my Pioneer PL 550-X. This album plays excellent with no pops, clicks, jumps, surface/background noise or distortion; a truly fantastic listen.

POSTAGE, PACKAGING, RETURNS

PAYMENT:

Items must be payed for within five days. If non payment within five days, I will then instigate an Ebay ruling. I will set up a dispute and either offer it to the runner up bidder or relist.

RETURNS POLICY:

I aim to provide an excellent service and hope that all buyers are satisfied with their purchase. However, if for any reason this should not be so, please contact me and on receipt of the item, I will give a full refund. I will not issue a refund if detail that is clearly stated on the advertisement has been missed by the buyer, so please read carefully.

PACKAGING:

I use preformed and standard mailers with stiffeners. I always take the vinyl out in its inner sleeve and place on top of the cover. This is then placed into a soft protective sleeve and packaged with stiffeners for full protection.

POSTAGE + PRICES

Please wait for an invoice before payment. I always ship between two-five days after payment. The prices below are based on one LP, however if several LP's are purchased, the cost will be slightly more. All EU and Over Seas purchases must be signed for with a value of up to £46. All purchases are sent Royal Mail first class. The postage prices include £1.50 for packaging materials.
