I will never compromise on quality, safe packaging – I NEVER use mailing envelopes that offer virtually no protection at all, and records WILL arrive damaged in them at some time as most record buyers will already know. Here, you get what you pay for – SAFE PACKING in BOXES using 7mm DOUBLE-WALL STIFFENERS including full side protection and bubble wrap, the records removed from the covers of course. All this very safe packing means I lose money on every box I post, but safe delivery is, and will always be paramount. You WILL see the difference when my packet arrives. Also, I will pay for insurance on any record that sells for over £100 at NO extra cost – that is UK and abroad. Also I aim to post the very same day after payment is received if possible. Label/Format: Atlantic, original red and maroon (‘plum’) format with matt, gently textured surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both in beautiful condition being very clean, fresh and highly attractive with any hint of spindle traces minuscule. Another one purchased by the one owner from new who put his records to tape. This sensational record appears barely played and sound is fantastic throughout.

Warps or Lateral Movement: Assume all records I offer have no significant warping or lateral movement to cause sound or tracking issues. All should play fine even on budget turntables.

Rarity: Scarce on the plum label, even more so hardly played and with a fine looking cover which is equally as difficult. This was quite a late album on this label format, their last prior to the change.

Brief Info: The fourth Yes album, and for many one of their very best. It sold well, peaking at No. 7 in the UK and 4 in the United States album charts. Superbly recorded and produced with sublime songs and musicianship from what most consider to be the very best Yes line-up. Intricate and complex with some very quiet passages, few early examples will be found much better than this. My play-grade was a revelation with hardly any unwanted sounds, the record superbly pressed and barely played. The cover lives up to it’s title, and few originals survive without often heavy rubbing, ring wear, light fading and sticker marks (or tears). This has a little light rubbing, but little else and also remains attractive. Plum pressings in this condition are now fast becoming rare and I can hardly imagine finding a much better copy of this progressive rock classic.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: the taken as something of an average as the back does have some rubbing, but the front and insides are superb, as is the spine in context of this unforgiving cover. A high-wear-prone unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. This has the correct and original 2401019 catalogue number. These original covers had the 8-page booklet glued to the centrefold, the two staples were never punched into the spine. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press and includes the November 1971 date-coded inner sleeve.

Cover Front: The superb Roger Dean graphic is gorgeous with minimal rubbing or wear bar tiny corner tip rubs. The lack of the usual heavy rubbing, creasing or sticker issues to one of his most famous and prized cover graphics is always the best news possible. This fresh, clean and with lovely deep colour, this also has a tendancy to fade which this has also avoided. A front seldom seen like this and one to hold and admire.

Cover Back: The back has modestly rubbed near the top and bottom, with the record pushing against this face, especially on the inside flipback areas, this is rarely avoided at best. However, the lack of ugly penetrating ring wear is a major plus, as again is the lack of creasing, both side have hardly any.

Cover Inner Gatefold & Booklet: Both left and right main faces are immaculate with nothing to fault. The 8-page booklet is the same – superb – clean, fresh with no creasing. The inner book pages slightly loosened on the staples, but still neatly attached, but I advise any winning bidder to handle and view it with care.

Top Edges: Both straight, flat and flush with any rubbing very light and patchy.

Bottom Edges: As above, the rubbing a little heavier, mainly on the front. Dark storage edges will rarely avoid some rubbing and in context, these have fared quite well. I have seen these and similar ones totally white and threadbare on many occasions. This pair nothing like that at all with approx 75% of the ink intact.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The closed factory cut front is still sharp and straight. The back opening edges are also still sharp with any thickening traces minuscule probably emphasising just how few times this record has inserted/removed.

Spine and Text: This is very impressive with any rubbing tiny, faint and light, confined mostly to the very ends and even this only small as-seen. Solid, robust and straight with minimal hint of compression, also folded very square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. The surface again retaining deep colour and no fading out with sunlight. All text unworn – again a rare sight on this one – also nicely centred on the surface as-seen.

Corners: Quite light to moderate tip rubbing that few will avoid. Fine to very fine shape retained with no major knocks.

Cover Summary: A strong example of this very fragile and unforgiving early 1970’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better, especially an original where the records tended to be thicker and heavier. This attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A polylined Philips style inner that has only gently aged with modest paper discolouration. The window circles are not the crispest cut I have ever seen, but that purely a manufacture blemish, but they are pretty much as-made, the lining still clear and fresh. Hardly any paper creasing and no edge splits. The date-coded 1171, meaning it was manufactured in November 1971. It is dual British patented with the numbers: 800513 & 973939. The HMO code is 47.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very fine visual example with any surface traces few, very fine, wispy and faint under bright light. No penetrating style scratches, viewed in average room light barely anything registers. Very clean, fresh with fine shine and solidly pressed. Another plus being the lack of inner sleeve dulling for which many Philips pressed records suffer from many years of not being removed from their polylined inner sleeves. Any hint under light purely confined to the run out area and very small. Appearing hardly played and visually impressive, one to please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant prog-rock album plays up to and even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds hardly even registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Even the several quiet passages play superbly including that very difficult fade on the final song. Few available copies will match or outperform this early plum copy I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. Not heard too many overall than this and it will prove very difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
