STUNNING NEAR MINT AUDIO!!

AN ARCHIVE COPY 37 YEARS OLD LIKE THIS NEVER NEED TO UPGRADE!!

Another from my personal collection! Purchased from new in 1974! I don't ever remember playing this vinyl when I purchased this album, it certainly looks totaly in unplayed condition in my opinion! Unbeleivably rare and impossible to find like this! The vinyl has always been stored seperately from the sleeve and cover which has obviously preserved this album in near pristine condition for over 37 years, this is how I have always stored my records! The original UK 1st issue Sherwood Packaging Gatefold looks as goos as the day that it was made in my opinion complete with the original thick heavy card lyric insert record sleeve amaizingly without splits or any creases! The vinyl features the original master pressers signature ''Porky'' on both sides very, very scarce to find indeed! There are no visual scratches or marks that I can see at all and looks like a new vinyl in my opinion with no viable spider marks around the labels,, looks unplayed! I have play tested the vinyl one time only at loud volume on a top system prior to listing and this plays through absolutely stunning top top near mint throughout!! Never need to upgrade , highly collectable and sought after like this!

Relayer is in my personal opinion, a highly underated album.  The seventh studio album by the progressive rock band Yes!!. Recorded and released in 1974, it is the only Yes studio album to feature Patrick Moraz, who replaced keyboardist Rick Wakeman earlier in the year!

After the ambitious double-concept album Tales from Topographic Oceans, Rick Wakeman left Yes to resume his solo career!!.

The band auditioned several prospective replacements, the closest contender being the Greek keyboardist Vangelis. He did not become a member of Yes, but these auditions paved the way for several future collaborations between Vangelis and Jon Anderson!

The band finally chose Swiss-born Patrick Moraz as a replacement while this album was well into production.

The album title comes from the lyrics of "The Remembering (High The Memory)" from Tales from Topographic Oceans.

As with most of Yes' previous albums, Relayer features artwork by Roger Dean! Relayer has the same song format as 1972's Close to the Edge—a long epic on the first side, and two nine-minute pieces on the second—but employs a radically different musical style!

"The Gates of Delirium" is a dense, 22-minute piece that was inspired by Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace. It features lyrics about the futility of war and a lengthy instrumental middle section portraying 'battle' with galloping rhythms, martial melodies, dissonant harmonies, and clashing sound effects .

The final section, in which the drive of the previous sixteen minutes is suddenly replaced by a gentle melody and a lyrical prayer for peace, was released as a U.S. single under the title "Soon" in early 1975. "Sound Chaser" is a jazzy, mostly instrumental piece that echoes the then-popular jazz fusion of Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return To Forever. "To Be Over," the gentlest piece on the album, features complex, melodic arrangements of guitar and electric sitar (at one point quoting a theme from Tales from Topographic Oceans), and arguably features Jon Anderson's most straightforward lyrics since the band's second album, Time and a Word!

The critical reaction to Relayer, coming after a predecessor that many critics felt was pretentious and long-winded, was mixed. However, it was still a commercial success, with many observers later considering it vastly underrated. No doubt, many were surprised at the sudden departure in terms of sound which Yes had made on this disc!

The atmosphere and sonic quality are very different from Close To The Edge or most of Tales From Topographic Oceans (the one track on that album which could be said to point towards Relayer is The Ancient with its free-form, spinning rhythms, Arabic-tinged percussion and its frantic, dramatic guitar work.) The vocals on Relayer are more dramatic, emotionally charged with aggression, and the guitar has stepped up to the front (in consequence of Wakeman's sudden departure), with a new hard edge. "Gates of Delirium" is "all Telecaster" according to Howe (The Steve Howe Guitar Collection, 1994, p. 43); before which he had generally and famously used Gibson. On "To Be Over" and the last parts of "Gates of Delirium" a pedal steel guitar is used (Steve Howe G.C. p. 47). Squire's bass lines and White's drumming throughout the album are of great dynamic range and complexity (with Squire using a Fender bass on "To Be Over" rather than his usual Rickenbacker). Bill Martin (in his book The Music of Yes) recalls how, as a teenager, he saw the band performing live in Atlanta in late 1974. As they opened with "Sound Chaser," then still-unreleased and very unlike anything they had previously recorded, Martin's first thought was that the band had gone crazy! Recorded at Chris Squire's home in Virginia Water, Surrey, UK, August–October 1974. Mixed at Advision Studios, London, autumn 1974 (some overdubs probably done at Advision). Produced by Yes and Eddie Offord. Recording/mixing engineer (apart from Offord): Genaro Rippo.

The recording made use of synths and percussive sounds not found on any other Yes album. Patrick Moraz got equipment (from its developers) which was still in prototype stage (for example, a Vako Orchestron, used for the string sounds throughout the album) and which coloured the sound effects on the instrumental/collage section of Gates of Delirium, for example the whooping and wheezing sounds ("electric slinky") suggestive of wraiths or people being torched alive about midway through the track!

The Vinyl

Visual: The vinyl lays perfectly flat on the turntable and is free from any warps (commonly seen on these mid seventies vinyls) The vinyl has a DEEP, LIKE-NEW, GLOSSY sheen retained from new and looks almost like a new vinyl in my opinion! Any marks that could possibly be seen under strong light would be sleeve removal only, importantly there is no scratches or at least no marks that would cause any loud clicks or pops at all!!

Audio: OUTSTANDING audio delivery - CRYSTAL CLEAR, DEEP, RICH, SHARP  and EXTREMELY STRONG and VIBRANT ON ALL FREQUENCIES. The soundscapes Yes create are absolutely STUNNING THROUGHOUT! You can really appreciate its complex prog/jazz composition, structure and execution. The LP plays with NO scratches, NO jumps, NO sticks, NO loud clicks or pops any minor isolated static  background crackle is extreemely minimal indeed (but very minor in my opinion and I did play-grade at an extremely LOUD volume). Critically graded at least Excellent Plus to almost as good as it gets in my personal opinion!

  • Please look at my other completed listings sold of this calaber and you will see that i normally get it right!!!!!

  • please note! I always add this disclaimer! I have played this vinyl through track for track at very loud volume on a top system and have given my honest opinion on the audio quality. Although I never heard any real problems myself and I would class myself as highly critical, Please allow for the odd isolated static/crackle/tick (not) consistant through out the audio! This is an original vinyl pressing not a reissue that is genuinely 37  years old would have been played on a system that is 37 years old! Please look at my completed listings of albums that I have sold of this calaber and you will see that I normally get it right!

  • Important Note! This vinyl has been stored in a case laying dormant for over 37 years, a build up od dirt and dust in the grooves causes static crackle and ticks. A constatnt clean before each play is highly recomended. This will reduce any static and will enhance the audio quality.

     The Gatefold Cover

This is the original unlaminated Sherwood Packaging Printed gatefold cover! Amaizingly (no) real rubbing ware, (no) splits or tares and (no) real creases worth to mention!! Unbeleivably rare to find like this! This cover has always been stored seperate from the vinyl which has obviously eliminated any ringware!! (see photos)  Amaizingly, this looks almost as good as the day that it was made in my opinion! A eal  a sharp spine with all (white) text CLEAR and BOLD. I would grade this cover at least excellent plus to near mint!!

    The Textured Lyric Sleeve.

The TEXTURED, THICK CARD lyric inner (only 1st isues)..  is also in SUPERB condition -  - CLEAN, CRISP and SQUARE NO wear and NO splits (NO) creases,   Please note, there is a small library number stamped in one corner on one side only.
