Label Conditions: Two super examples that are very clean, fresh and attractive. Spindle marks are only very light, small, fine and faint and only show under angled light. This very impressive record looks very little played, and with utmost care.

Cat Number: 2400101.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 134 grams. A very good solid weight.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarcer as a very early pressing, and they rarely get seen much earlier than this. A popular prog-rock album and those who bought it initially, usually played it heavily. The unprotected cover is well-known for wear and again is seldom seen devoid of it.

Brief Info: The band’s third album and the one that got them really noticed. A highly popular album within the progressive rock genre and it justifiably sold well. Hence finding Plum copies is far from impossible but conditions are always a major factor. Highly gifted musicians and complex music does not tolerate old worn stylus abuse and this includes some very quiet passages. A pre-Rick Wakeman album, the keys were taken by Tony Kaye, who subsequently left before the ‘Fragile’ classic. This one of the earliest pressings I have seen, appears very little played and offers superb sound quality. The cover is equally fragile and this one of the better ones I have seen for some time. The inner sleeve which is date coded 471 (April 1971) also in very fine, and modestly aged condition. For those needing an early-pressed and lightly used copy of this prog classic, this could fit the bill nicely.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: this being very critical on an uncompromising wear-prone cover. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces and original 2400101 number (of course). Printed and made in England by MacNeill. Includes the original inner April date-coded inner sleeve (seen in close-up), only a couple of months later than the issue month of February.

Cover Front: A very fine looking front with little wear at all. Small rubbing on the corner tips is rarely avoided as a bare minimum and any of the very few creases, gentle, fine and faint (near the spine edge). A very line near the right edge is purely within manufacture. The lack of rubbing, ring or significant marks and no sticker issues are all major pluses on a front that remains fresh and clean. This sets a high standard.

Cover Back: A few fine edge creases and small tip rubs again, but little else really. The lack of ring wear is unusual but most welcome. All quite similar to the front and still very attractive.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Minor rub traces as these dark inside often acquire over time, but again little really to fault.

Top Edges: Both straight with any rubbing quite light and patchy.

Bottom Edges: A fraction more than above, but in context for this one, still only light.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both clean and mostly sharp with minimal traces of wear with barely a hint of any thickening or burring. Record enters on the back edge, both untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Quite solid and reasonably straight. A little compression with a very fine central line crease purely by being opened. The ends have rubbed a little but all the text is present and is close to wear-free. Both the vulnerable folds appear hardly worn and retaining most-all of their ink with no scuffs or card exposure. I cannot rule-out the odd tiny tip-in, but if so, it is far from obvious, so-much-so, I do not know for sure.

Corners: Light to moderate tip and corner rubbing with fine to very fine shape retained. Most on the spine top.

Cover Summary: A very fine all-round example of this very wear-prone early 70’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find a great deal better. With the main areas in very strong and little-worn condition, this attractive item should please many collectors but the highly discerning.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: and only marked down for the usual seam adhesive darkening and mild ageing. This a Polydor style polylined inner with the 471 (April 1971) date-code, the month of issue being February, so this dates this copy well. Both windows are ultra crisp and neat, the lining is solid and very clear with minimal crinkle. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): with two superb playing surfaces (and labels). Indeed side one is little short of pristine and a Mint(-) grading is appropriate. Any surface traces on side two are very fine and faint as seen under bright angled light. A very impressive visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy that appears hardly played – reitterated by top quality sound – this on a popular progressive giant of an album now into it’s forty-second year. This record should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes – and what a pleasure it was to do so. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This prog-classic plays even above it’s very high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, top quality sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is almost audiophile standard with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A high fidelity recording from a band, even in the early days, who cared about quality with complex music from way above average rock musicians. The incredible detail and clarity has to be heard. Devoid of pops or clicks and any surface sound traces minuscule. These progressive albums always have quiet passages so absolute silence is a very tough ask, but this very well pressed copy gives of it’s very best, this too played on very sensitive equipment. Few very early examples will better this I feel sure. All the intricate sounds, vocals and instruments fully focused and sharp. Just listen to the acoustic guitar solo ‘The Clap’, every chord change can be heard with precision and clarity. Nothing spoilt my immense pleasure when play-grading this impressive record. Do not underestimate how difficult this one is to find in such fine all-round condition, one that merits strong recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
