Label Conditions: Two superb examples that are ultra clean, fresh and attractive. Spindle marks are light to light+ with both playing surfaces immaculate with pristine sound. This very early issue is something a little special.

Cat Number: 2400101.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 137 grams. An impressive weight for this one.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarcer as a very early pressing. Confirming the vintage of this copy, it includes its original polylined inner which includes date code of 6/0271 (seen in close-up). This was issued in February 1971 making this one of the earliest you will ever see. A Plum copy of this that also plays to perfection is a rare and wonderful experience. Often they crackle, especially if played on unworthy old equipment from the distant past. Only the most lightly played copies on worthy systems have any chance to track and reproduce the complex sounds this talanted progressive band are known for, and there lies the difference. Not only that, this includes a stunning barely worn cover and they are even harder to find than the cleanest records. Discerning cover and audiophile sound purists, please apply.

Brief Info: The band’s third album and the one that got them really noticed. A highly popular album within the progressive rock genre and it justifiably sold well. Hence finding Plum copies is far from impossible but conditions are always a major factor. Highly gifted musicians and complex music does not tolerate old worn stylus abuse and this includes some very quiet passages. A pre-Rick Wakeman album, the keys were taken by Tony Kaye, who subsequently left before the ‘Fragile’ classic. This record plays beautifully and looks practically as clean and fresh as when made over 40-years-ago. The cover is remarkable also, one of the best I have seen for some time. Both the inner sleeve and matrix numbers confirm this is one of the earliest copies ever pressed and for fans wanting this prog classic in conditions that do come close to reminding of new, look no further, it’s here.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++), and a couple of minor faint marks off a full Mint(-). An unlaminated gatefold format with matt finish and original 2400101 number. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press and marketed by Polydor. Includes original inner February date-coded inner sleeve (seen in close-up). Rarely are these seen so fine, most are badly worn and tired looking, often severely rubbed and ringworn, this one almost transports you back to the winter of 71.

Cover Front: WOW!, at last a really superb looking front and few will even get close to it. Massively prone to rubbing and sticker damage, this has avoided any of that with any marks are few and very faint, a couple of super-faint surface marks only show under light, the only blemishes (if can indeed call them that) on the whole front which remains very clean, fresh, dark and practically crease-free. One, yes just one, ultra fine spine edge hairline and that’s it. With normal viewing, this is nearly as good as these get, the lack of creasing and surface rubbing is great news and all ink intact with no erosion or fading or tear marks. One to hold and admire, not hide away awaiting a better one, this a lifetime ‘keeper’.

Cover Back: The back is practically the same with just a faint minor scuff trace only (but look hard). A couple of ultra fine hairline edge creases, apart, these are the only blemishes on the superb back that’s practically the equal of the hugely impressive front. The lack of ringwear is significant on this and few ever avoid it. Both front and back are supremely fresh and clean and show little traces of handling to the sensitive dark matt surfaces. Without any doubt, cover protected for many years, I doubt if this has been handled or even seen daylight for decades.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Both faces are in superb condition and have nothing really to fault.

Top Edges: Both unworn and dead straight, no tip-ins of any kind evident at all, the same goes for the whole cover.

Bottom Edges: Largely the same again, any rub traces are practically microscopic.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with minimal traces of wear, both guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: This vulnerable spine is exceptional: solid, straight with no compression and folded square. All edges meet up closely together and parallel, this always makes the cover look so much neater and I deem is important enough to mention. All text is perfect and unworn as can be seen on my close-up picture. Few of these will be seen better.

Corners: Any tip rubs are tiny and faint, the odd tip semi-crease being somewhat critical but all retain excellent shape and definition.

Cover Summary: An example that sets the bar very high indeed, a fantastic all-round example of this very wear-prone early 70’s cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find better. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors and is arguably undergraded.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: little to fault on this original February date-coded Polydor style polylined inner. The date code is seen in close-up as 6/02/71, the month of issue for this classic prog set. A little age discolour of the glue on the seams that all remain intact with no repairs. Both windows are neat and mainly crisp, one small ruffle on the front. The lining is solid and very clear with barely any creasing which is the same for the entire inner.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and this being ultra critical. A fantastic visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy played little and with the utmost care and both playing surfaces look superb. This on a popular progressive giant of an album now over forty. Any surface blemishes are very few and ultra faint, seen critically under light, few will show fewer. These and similar albums from this era that have clearly been played little, often suffer inner bag rash where the polymer reacts with the record’s surface. This one has avoided it totally but some are not quite as lucky. In most cases, it has no affect on sound but just blights the appearace a little. Not only does this look great, it sounds the same and even the most discerning sound purists who cherish all the brilliance of the audio quality of this first issue.

Album Played For Grading: Yes – and what a pleasure it was to do so. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This gorgeous record plays even above it’s very high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is of audiophile standard with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A high fidelity recording from a band, even in the early days, who cared about quality with complex music from way above average rock musicians. The incredible detail and clarity has to be heard. So cleanly pressed and devoid of surface sounds, pops or clicks, this can be enjoyed on the high-end systems I know some of my regulars own. Few copies will even match, let alone surpass this earliest pressing I feel sure. All the intricate sounds, vocals and instruments fully focused and sharp, this is a dream-piece of a copy that will never need upgrading. Just listen to the acoustic guitar solo ‘The Clap’, every chord change can be heard with precision and clarity. Truly a journey into the recording studio with mastertape audio quality. A reference standard original record, few could ask for more. All evidence reitterate a lightly played record that came from a top quality collection, clearly well stored in a non-smoking environment and carefully handled. Nothing whatsoever spoilt my immense pleasure when play-grading this wonderful piece. The rare tingle factor was achieved several times on this one, only the cleanest, best recordings ever achieve it. This record will prove immesely difficult to find better and again, merits my highest possible recommendation. Do no underestimate how difficult this one is to find in such lovely all-round condition.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
