Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with a high degree of freshness retained. Spindle marks are light to light+ and only very light, fine and faint. Played very modestly on this evidence on top equipment. Both playing surfaces are clean, with a small few surface marks with no sound and the audio quality is practically flawless.

Cat Number: 2400006.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 138 grams. A very good weight for this one.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Original plum copies are quite scarce and elusive, in this condition quite rare. This was not a big seller, only after the issue of their third, ‘The Yes Album’ did they get more recognised with sales rising accordingly. It did chart briefly peaking at No. 45 in the UK, but failed to break into the US charts at all. The US version included very different artwork.

Brief Info: Brilliant second album from one of rock’s evergreen progressive bands, some even consider it their best ever. It was clear even from these early days, this band were very special and technically up-there with the very best around at the time. From these early beginnings, things progressed fast and soon they became one of the biggest and most successful within their field. It was the last to feature Peter Banks soon to be replaced by Steve Howe. Early Plum pressings are much harder to find than Kinney repressings. Ones with better covers and records hardly played are much sort after and prized, this includes the lyric insert sheet that again must have the original number to be a ‘first’.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and arguably a little better still, this is a very unforgiving cover. An unlaminated single format with a matt finish and very delicate indeed. Rarely seen devoid of major rubbing, grubbiness and ringwear. Printed and made in England by MacNeill and including the original lyric insert sheet.

Cover Front: Slightly daring artwork that was changed in the US. This one is clean with few marks or rubbing, the lack of grubbiness quite unusual. A small few, very light surface creases show little and this front will prove difficult to find much better.

Cover Back: Very slight rub traces near the top edge but again overall wear is minimal and the lack of ringwear and grubbiness a real bonus. Clearly well stored and little handled with barely a crease to be seen.

Top Edge: Barely any wear and any discolouration, light and very faint.

Bottom Edge: Very light rubbing only, being the resting edge, few will show less.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely any wear and no feathering, guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, mainly straight with minimal compression with barely any wear and any grubbiness very faint indeed. Very mild rub traces near the manufactured tapered ends, being white with minimal visibility. Any wear traces to the text is minuscule and this is also a major bonus on this unforgiving cover.

Corners: A little gentle tip rubbing with very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: Never easy to find attractive examples of this cover. This is very nice with any wear modestly light. It should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): the original Polydor style polylined inner is in very fine condition. It has possibly faded a little with a little seam glue darkening. The date code on this one is 0970 which dates this early. The lining is solid and very clear with a two crisp and undamaged window circles. No side splits and minimal traces of creasing.

The Lyric Insert: EXCELLENT(++): this lyric insert is close to perfect with no creasing or toning and includes the correct original number 2400006 (beware of Kinney substitutions). Any marks or crinkles are few and very faint indeed, only just about enough to downgrade from Mint(-), but a close call for sure. Printed one side only and still very clean and white.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: overall, side one better, a little more down on side two. A few fine and faint surface marks on side one, a few more small but more easily seen surface marks on two. All have NO sound whatsoever. In fact this superb record plays to nigh-on perfection and this is no easky matter for this complex music. Still a very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. This record looks modestly played on all the evidence and sounds fantastic. Visually a impressive for a 41-year-old original album, one that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant record plays even above its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. With no surface sounds even worthy of mention or pops or clicks, this is an exceptional clean pressing, just the way the discerning listener wants them to sound. Few copies will match or outperform this very early quality Plum pressing I feel sure. Nothing whatsoever spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This lovely complete example will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended. Not quite for the visual perfectionist, but the super sound more than compensates and the cover and inner are lovely.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
