Label Conditions: Both immaculate, very clean and attractive with just a couple of very fine spindle traces only. This 1970s pressing has clearly hardly even been handled or likely played.

Cat Number: K 40085.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 141 grams. This is no lightweight repress, it’s actually heavier than many of the plum originals. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Original plum copies are scarce and elusive, in this condition quite rare and expensive. This 70s pressed record looks great and plays to perfection throughout. The cover is very nice too and lacking the usual grubbiness most are seen with. The lyric insert is included too. As I have stated before, the advantage of slightly later pressed records is they are more likely to have avoided the heavy tracking weights of older equipment that reeked havoc with the delicate grooves. This wonderful record has not suffered any such abuse and plays beautifully for its complete entirety.

Original Year of Release: 1970 on the ‘plum’ Atlantic format – this is an early 70s repressing.

Musicians: Bill Bruford - drums, vibes; Tony Kaye - keyboards; Peter Banks - guitar, vocals; Chris Squire - bass, vocals; John Anderson - lead singer, percussion.

Brief Info: Brilliant second album from one of rock’s evergreen progressive bands, some even consider it their best ever. It was clear even from these early days, this band were very special and technically up-there with the very best around at the time. From these early beginnings, things progressed fast and soon they became one of the biggest and most successful within their field. It was the last to feature Peter Banks soon to be replaced by Steve Howe. This may not be a ‘plum’ original, but still a fantastic example with a cleaner cover than usual, superb record and insert. The sound is immaculate throughout and without doubt, it’s hardly been played. The label design apart, this is pretty much the same as the first issued and for those who just want clean examples, this will prove near unbeatable.

Cover Grade and Format: Very strong EX and very much arguably better, an unlaminated single format with a matt finish and very delicate indeed. Rarely seen devoid of major rubbing, grubbiness and ringwear. Pretty much identical to the plum original except the Cat. No. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press.

Cover Front: A few small surface marks seen under angled light and a tiny thumb nick on the right edge. That apart, little else to fault and this looks clean and fresh with any grubbiness or set-off ultra mild and faint. So often affected by ringwear and sticker marks, this front has none and the lack of creasing is always a bonus.

Cover Back: The left edge central has a smallish black mark which I am certain is an ink splash from manufacture. Little else to fault that apart and most all similar to the front.

Top Edge: Barely any wear at all, ultra mild darkening if being somewhat critical.

Bottom Edge: Light rub near the right corner but little else.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely any wear and no feathering, guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression with barely any wear. All text is near perfect and unworn.

Corners: Mild tip rubs on the bottom pair, the top being white has little evidence of any. All retain very fine shape.

Cover Summary: Never easy to find attractive examples of this cover. One that had very different artwork in the very sensitive US. This is nice, the small ink mark on the back being the only blemish of note, if that is an issue, please do not bid.

The Inner: Mint(-), a plain white unlined inner that is almost like new.

The Insert: Mint(-), this lyric insert is near perfect also, just one faint corner crease. Printed one side only and still very clean and white.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX+ to EX++ A super visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed, actually heavier than some originals. Just ultra fine surface traces and very minor paper marks that have NO effect on sound at all. Merely removal type blemishes that few records ever avoid especially those that came with unlined inners. This record looks hardly played on all the evidence and sounds fantastic. Visually a very nice record that should please most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant record plays even above its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Barely any traces of surface sound and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will match or outperform this quality 70s pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing whatsoever spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. The ideal copy for those just wanting to enjoy super-clean sound with fine looks and not bothered if its a very first-made or not. This lovely complete example will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
