Label Conditions: Both immaculate: very clean and attractive with a high degree of freshness retained. Any spindle marks are very light, few, fine and faint. Played very modestly on this evidence on top equipment. This superb prog classic offers hugely impressive sound.

Cat Number: 2400006.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 145 grams. A very good weight for this one.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Original plum copies are quite scarce and elusive, in this condition quite rare. This was not a big seller, only after the issue of their third, ‘The Yes Album’ did they get more recognised with sales rising accordingly. It did chart briefly peaking at No. 45 in the UK, but failed to break into the US charts at all. The US version had very different artwork.

Brief Info: Brilliant second album from one of rock’s evergreen progressive bands that contined where the debut (also on offer) left off. It was clear even from these early days, this band were hugely talented and technically ahead of the field. From these early beginnings, things progressed fast and soon they became one of the biggest and most successful within their genre. It was the last to feature Peter Banks soon to be replaced by Steve Howe. Early Plum pressings are much harder to find than Kinney repressings. Ones with better covers and records hardly played are much sort after and prized, this includes the lyric insert sheet that again must have the original number to be a ‘first’.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and arguably a little better still, this is a very unforgiving cover. An unlaminated single format with a matt finish and very delicate indeed. Rarely seen devoid of major rubbing, grubbiness and ringwear. Printed and made in England by MacNeill and including the original lyric insert sheet.

Cover Front: Slightly daring artwork that was changed in the US. This one is clean with few marks or rubbing, the lack of grubbiness quite unusual. A small few, very light surface creases show little and this front will prove difficult to find much better.

Cover Back: Again little real wear and the lack of ringwear makes for a very attractive back. A small few light surface creases again show little. Towards the bottom right corner, a small press marks are seen under light, but little spoils this impressive all-round cover.

Top Edge: Minimal hints of any wear.

Bottom Edge: Practically as made.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely any wear, any thickening or burring tiny and faint. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, mainly straight with any compression light and little. Barely any wear and any grubbiness very faint indeed. The ends are tapered in manufacture and all text totally unworn, bold and crisp.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and light and all retain excellent or better shape.

Cover Summary: Never easy to find attractive examples of this cover. This is very nice indeed with any blemishes modestly light. It should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a plain white polylined inner that has aged generally well. Some reasonably modest, mild darkening around the edge adhesive areas and with a very clear lining as seen through two very crisp and sharp window circles. All edges unsplit with no repairs and just one fine crease on the front with little else. This one is date-coded 1271.

The Lyric Insert: EXCELLENT(++): this lyric insert is close to perfect with no creasing or toning and includes the correct original number 2400 006 (beware of Kinney substitutions). Any marks or crinkles are few and very faint indeed, only just about enough to downgrade from Mint(-), but a close call for sure. Printed one side only and still very clean and white.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and this being very critical, this is a superb record. A few fine and faint surface traces just about seen on side two under bright angled light, but try to find one better than this.This superb album plays to nigh-on perfection and this is no easy task for this complex music. A very impressive visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. This record looks hardly even played on all the evidence and sounds fantastic. Visually beautiful for a 41-year-old original album, one that should please most-all collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant record plays even above it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Barely any hints of surface sound and no pops or clicks were noted, this is an exceptional clean pressing, just the way the discerning listener wants them to sound. Few copies will match or outperform this very early quality Plum pressing I feel sure. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. YES – this lovely complete example will prove immensely difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended, I am sure the band themselves would approve.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
