Label Conditions: Both immaculate: very clean and highly attractive with just one or two ultra fine and faint spindle traces only. This another from the same superb collection as the other two Yes albums I am currently offering.

Cat Number: 2400006.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 122 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Original plum copies are scarce and elusive, in this condition quite rare. This was not a big seller, only after the issue of their third, ‘The Yes Album’ did they get more recognised with sales rising accordingly. It did chart briefly peaking at No. 45 in the UK, but failed to break into the US charts at all. The US version included different artwork as their market did not encourage anything at all risque.

Original Year of Release: 1970, from the date code on the inner sleeve of this one, it appears to be a 1971 pressing and a very late one too, almost certainly the final Plum pressing available (see information on ‘The Inner’ paragraph further down).

Musicians: Bill Bruford - drums, vibes; Tony Kaye - keyboards; Peter Banks - guitar, vocals; Chris Squire - bass, vocals; John Anderson - lead singer, percussion.

Brief Info: Brilliant second album from one of rock’s evergreen progressive bands, some even consider it their best ever. It was clear even from these early days, this band were very special and technically up-there with the very best around at the time. From these early beginnings, things progressed fast and soon they became one of the biggest and most successful within their field. It was the last to feature Peter Banks soon to be replaced by Steve Howe. Early Plum pressings are much harder to find than Kinney repressings. Ones with better covers and records hardly played are much sort after and prized, this includes the lyric insert sheet that again must have the original number to be a ‘first’.

Cover Grade and Format: EX and arguably a little better. An unlaminated single format with a matt finish and very delicate indeed. Rarely seen devoid of major rubbing, grubbiness and ringwear. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press and including the original lyric insert sheet.

Cover Front: Very slight and faint toning traces near the left edge and a little faint rubbing near the bottom edge. Any marks or creases are few and very faint indeed and this somewhat unforgiving front looks very nice indeed. Emphasise again, this UK original has different artwork to the US version.

Cover Back: All very similar again, mild tone traces near the spine edge and faint rub traces near the very top and bottom edges/ Any grubbiness faint and the lack of ringwear is unusual but great news of course.

Top Edge: Mildly discoloured but little else to fault.

Bottom Edge: Very faint rub traces only.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely any wear and no feathering, guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression with barely any wear, but some toning to the white surface. The ends gently tapered in manufacture and all text present and totally unworn.

Corners: The corners show little wear and retain very fine shape.

Cover Summary: Never easy to find attractive examples of this cover. This is nice with any wear modestly light. It should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner: The original Polydor style polylined inner is around Excellent. It has age toned and has one corner crease. The date code on this one is 1271 which means this is a very late, possibly very last Plum pressing as the format changed around or soon after this time. The lining is in place and with a clear window, but loose near the top entrance edge. No side splits and the circle window is immaculate.

The Insert: Mint(-), this lyric insert is practically perfect with no creasing or toning and includes the correct original number 2400006 (beware of Kinney substitutions). Printed one side only and still very clean and white.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX (critically graded, arguably better) with just a couple of very fine surface marks or hairline that have NO sound whatsoever. In fact this superb record plays to perfection and equally as good as the other two Plum Yes albums I am currently offering from the same collection. A really lovely visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. This record looks hardly played on all the evidence and sounds fantastic. Visually a beauty that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant record plays even above its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. With no surface sounds even worthy of mention or pops or clicks, this is an exceptional clean pressing, just the way the discerning listener wants them. Few copies will match or outperform this quality Plum pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled. Nothing whatsoever spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This lovely complete example will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
