Name the one Yes album between Close to the Edge and 90125 that went Platinum. Give up? This one!

I have a theory about this album. The name and cover are stupid and off-putting. The album was panned by critics upon release (like most of the band's classic albums with the possible exceptions of Fragile and Going for the One). Anderson and Wakeman left the band after this album, essentially ending the classic Yes period. Finally, members of Yes have subsequently expressed dissatisfaction with this album and the process of recording it. Combine all that and you have a perfect storm of factors that will tend to turn off the average Yes fan before they even hear the music.

I confess I've been a Yes fan for more than 25 years and I never heard this album until I picked it up about a month ago.

Extremely melodic, this one has great singing from John (plus lots of nice harmonly vocals), wonderful guitar and good playing from the rest of the band. Overall this has a similar sound to Going for the One - bright and energetic. It does have a more lighthearted sound to it - much less serious and some would probably say goofy. The songs are about the same length here except there's no epic length song on this. I don't get the feeling that the band lacks room to develop the songs - they work really well for their length. Howe's guitar is great. Some of Wakeman's synths sound a little weird, but overall his work is excellent, too. There are a couple of strange moments (Anderson's kid showing up in "Circus of Heaven") and some of the lyrics are odd for Yes (in that they are too straightforward) but overall the songs and arrangements are excellent. Overall, I would say this is even better than Going for the One - more energetic and exciting, more melodic and simultaneously more organic than its predecessor. Wakeman uses more synths and modern keyboards vs. piano and organ, which suits the music very well.

My biggest surprise - I got the remastered and extended version and the additional songs added are almost as good as the album tracks! They are quite varied stylistically but I think they all work and again have great melodies, singing and playing. These additional tracks are much looser than the other material but really present an enjoyable side to this band. Some of these are goofy also but many are great. With the added tracks it's essentially a double album (18 songs, 80 minutes) that is almost the flip side of Tales from Topographic Oceans, with much shorter songs, more of a pop feel and simpler, more direct lyrics, but just as good melodically and in terms of playing. Both these albums have a less produced, looser feel than most of this band's other albums. It may sound strange, but I think this and Tales . . . have a lot in common in their overall feel.

If you love Going for the One or Tales from Topographic Oceans, I strongly recommend you get this - please listen to it with an open mind!
