Description
ALONG WITH "CITIZEN KANE," one of the more frothy productions at the RKO studio in the spring of 1941 was "THEY MET IN ARGENTINA." Starring Maureen O'Hara, the second leads were BUDDY EBSEN and DIOSA COSTELLO, who cut a rug to "YOU'VE GOT THE BEST OF ME." In this delightful number, Buddy and Diosa are a great dancing pair, set off by the 'Mutt & Jeff' differences in their height - Ebsen was six-feet-four and Diosa a petite five-foot-three!
(n.b.: Buddy Ebsen, of course, is best known in his '60s TV role as Jed Clampett, of "The Beverly Hilbillies.")
THIS 12" 78-rpm studio lacquer is the original pre-production record of this number, used on-set. The finished film shows E. and D. tap-dancing, but this record has only singing and music, with the taps added to the playback. It's a fascinating document of the pre-magnetic tape era of movie making.
The flip side is another production number from the same film, "CAREFREE CARATERRO," sung by a lusty Latino quartet.
"They Met In Argentina" seems to have been in line with the FDR "Good Neighbor Policy," which promoted amity among the Western Hemisphere nations during WWII, and triggered a spate of pictures like Fox's "Down Argentine Way," Disney's "Saludos Amigos," and this one.
THIS original 1941 twelve-inch 78-rpm lacquer by RKO studios, dated in pencil "March 1, 1941," is nominally in E condition.

*****
These records come from my private collection, which I have been accumulating since 1967, and now am downsizing! My highest priority in these eBay auctions is to give you the best possible idea of a record’s true condition and aesthetic value. I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all. If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will! Shipping is done with expert care. Your record will brave Media Mail in a stout corregated box, between four sheets of cardboard and a couple of “packers.” I hope you are amused by these descriptions, and by the quality of service being offered.
An Unsolicited Testimonial!: "Superbatone is one of the coolest people on eBay - seriously. An excellent source for music, knowledge, and whimsy, and an asset to the community who cares about music and its preservation. It goes without saying that he is an expert in all facets surrounding 78’s and their content."
