Yvette Guilbert – a voice of the Parisian Belle Époque

Yvette Guilbert (1865–1944) was one of the distinctive figures of the French café-concert and an emblematic performer of fin-de-siècle Paris. Singer, actress, author and composer, she developed a highly individual art of interpretation in which diction, characterisation and dramatic expression played a central role.

These very early Pathé recordings preserve Guilbert's voice at the beginning of the twentieth century, when commercial sound recording was itself still in its pioneering years. Recorded acoustically and preserved on Pathé's characteristic early etched discs, they offer an evocative document of French café-concert culture and of the first generation of celebrated performers whose voices were captured on record.
