Yvette Guilbert – a voice of the Parisian Belle Époque

Yvette Guilbert (1865–1944) was one of the distinctive figures of the French café-concert and an emblematic performer of fin-de-siècle Paris. Singer, actress, author and composer, she developed a highly individual art of interpretation in which diction, characterisation and dramatic expression played a central role.

“Les cloches de Nantes” belongs to the traditional French song repertoire cultivated by Guilbert alongside the café-concert songs for which she had become famous. Her interpretation reflects the later part of a remarkable career that connected the world of the nineteenth-century Parisian café-concert with the new recording technologies of the twentieth century.

Ciné-Disc and the changing world of recorded entertainment

Ciné-Disc records were produced by the French Recording Company, whose Paris address appears on the label as “12, Bd de la Madeleine”. Surviving Ciné-Disc records are identified by programme and disc numbers, reflecting their organisation as parts of prepared programmes rather than simply as conventional commercial song releases.

This record belongs to the period in which recorded sound, popular entertainment and cinema were undergoing profound changes as the silent-film era approached its end. Its period paper sleeve, carrying the names “French Recording Cy”, “Ciné-Sonor” and “Ciné-Disc”, is an especially interesting surviving element of this historical context.
