ITEM DESCRIPTION:

With these 4 beautiful LPs – fine collector's copies all – from Spanish Columbia and Zafiro one can collect early pressing of the master guitarist Narcisco Yepes, 3 in stereo and 1 in mono – all in lovely laminated jackets and all boasting superb artwork and production values.

 

I believe all 4 albums were recorded in the late 1950s / early 1960s and certainly pre-date his association with Deutsche Grammophon. The repertoire is varied and quite interesting, presenting several works that even now are seldom heard in the concert hall or on record.

Columbia SCE 920

This beautiful LP – a superb collector's copy – from Spanish Columbia (SCE 920, Spanish pressing, blue/silver label, stereo) features the great Narciso Yepes in a recital of music from Spain, France, and South America, all showing this remarkable guitarist's technical mastery and interpretative insight to marvelous effect. This LP is particularly valuable as it presents repertoire seldom heard either in the concert hall or in the studio and I believe several of the works preserved here are first recordings.

These performances were recorded in Madrid in the late 1950s / early 1960s and sound truly splendid here, well capturing Yepes' distinctive sound world. Outside of Spain, I do not believe that any of these recordings have ever been issued on CD.

 

There are outstanding liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in Spanish only. The lovely cover photo is similarly uncredited.

 

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

 

The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is a crease to the lower-right corner and a tiny bit of fraying to the laminate on the rear panel, but that is all. Otherwise, the album appears close to new. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.

 

The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent, this is a fine copy and the playback is quite superb. Those requiring flawless or NM surfaces are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.

Columbia SCLL 14044

This beautiful LP– from Spanish Columbia (SCLL 14044, Spanish pressing, blue/silver label, stereo) features the great Narciso Yepes in magnificent performances of Joaquin Rodrigo's Fantasia para un Gentilhombre and Mauricio Ohana's Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra "Tres Gráficos". Both were made with the young conductor Rafael Frübeck de Burgos and the Orquesta Nacional de España. Although Yepes would later re-make both works for DG, these earlier readings are imbued with a wonderful sense of discovery and true occasion.

 

These performances were recorded in Madrid in the late 1950s / early 1960s and sound truly splendid here, well capturing Yepes' distinctive sound world.

 

There are outstanding liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in Spanish only. The lovely cover photo is similarly uncredited.

This beautiful LP – a superb collector's copy – from Spanish Columbia (CS 8565, Spanish pressing, blue/silver label, stereo) features the great Narciso Yepes in a remarkable range of repertoire, all brought off with stunning technical command and brilliant elan. In addition to two very stylish concerto performances, we are treated to his magnificent rendition of the mighty Chaconne from Bach's Partita for Unaccampanied Violin No. 2 in D minor BWV 1004.

This handsome LP from Zafiro (Z-L 57, Spanish pressing, red/silver label, mono, laminated flipback jacket) features the great Narciso Yepes in a recital of music from Spain abd Brazil, all showing this remarkable guitarist's technical mastery and interpretative insight to marvelous effect. This LP is particularly valuable as it presents one composer – Isaias Savio – who is seldom heard either in the concert hall or in the studio and I believe the work by him preserved here is a first recording.
