Description
Yes Close to the Edge Vinyl LP 1972 Atlantic SD 7244 US First Press VG+.
Up for sale is an exceptional original 1972 US stereo first pressing of Yes’ definitive progressive rock masterpiece Close to the Edge (Atlantic Records, SD 7244). Widely cited as the absolute pinnacle of the entire progressive rock movement, this monumental release features Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Steve Howe, Rick Wakeman, and Bill Bruford executing dense, symphonic arrangements across the massive side-long title track suite, paired with "And You and I" and "Siberian Khatru."
This specific copy is a verified Columbia Records Pressing Plant, Terre Haute first pressing, as confirmed by the hand-etched "T" identifiers in the deadwax. This early execution features premium master lacquers cut directly by legendary audio engineer George Piros, proudly bearing his signature hand-etched "AT/GP" mastering hallmark in the runout. Housed in its authentic 1970s vintage gatefold presentation jacket with a textured canvas finish designed by Roger Dean, complete with the original custom green lyric inner sleeve insert and the classic green-and-orange Atlantic center labels.
Condition (Media/Sleeve): VG+ / VG+ (Vinyl looks great, displaying a deep black reflective mirror gloss under normal storage surface dust and fingerprints. It has sat safely unplayed for at least 7 years and shows only minor, superficial sleeve handling scuffs that do not affect playback quality; it will play with fantastic, warm clarity. The outer textured gatefold jacket is clean, bright, and rigid with firm seams and clear spine text, showing only typical minor vintage storage shelf wear and slight softening/rubbing on the upper corner profiles as shown in the close-up photo. The original green printed lyric inner sleeve is included but features a clean 1” seam split on the right side edge).
Pressing Details: US First Pressing, Columbia Terre Haute Plant Press, George Piros Mastering, Matrix Side One: ST-A-722617-A AT/GP T.
Shipping: Ships securely in a dedicated cardboard vinyl mailer. The record will be carefully packaged inside a protective sleeve outside of the gatefold jacket cover to ensure no seam splits occur to the jacket during transit.
Note: This record is part of a massive collection of 1,300 albums that I lovingly inherited from my late father. They have been safely stored away for the last 7 years. Because of the sheer volume, I am grading them visually under bright light and cannot play-test every track. They are being sold in their authentic, as-found condition and will naturally have some light surface dust from storage, so they will benefit from a standard cleaning before playback. I am listing new titles daily! If you are looking for a specific artist or album from his era, please message me—I am happy to check the stacks for requests and combine shipping to save you money.
