FRANK ZAPPA & THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION - (Cruising with) Ruben and The Jets ORIG Verve MONO LP VLP 9237 (UK, 1968)
Happy to present this very rare MONO (A1/B1 matrices) 1st press of Zappa’s homage to the doo-wop styles which he grew up with. This comes with the SINGLE front laminated sleeve and not the re-released gatefold.
The original tri-flipback sleeve, made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. UK is pretty smart and solid with the following defects; heavy corner crease to the front bottom right, 4 small and light thumb creases on the front, crease to front top, very slight feathering, mild yellowing/toning to the rear white panel, some faded writing on the rear(hardly visible now, try spotting it) that has been rubbed out, slightly blunted corners and VERY slight ring impression mainly to the front. Other than these, there are NO splits nor tears nor stickers nor edge wear and the spine (with the text printed in blue) is fine with no splits or rubbing of the text. Not mint but not bad, I’m going a true VG (no major faults, colour still looks fine!).
The original textured matt black Verve VLP labels with the ‘Sold In The UK’ text are fine with NO writing, stickers, residue or other damage and showing only mild spindle traces indicating light play.
The medium weight vinyl looks lovely and has NO major issues. Visually this is what I picked up under close examination; a light scratch line to S1/T3 and another 4 small (and I mean small) hairlines to this side. There’s another longer hairline to Side 2 and a small scuff, but both sides particularly Side 2 look fresh with near full shine and unblemished grooves. Visually I think an EX- (Excellent Minus) is true, while it plays great with a very unusual MONO mix sounding loud and clear. There’s no snap, pops, distortion or loss of clarity. I heard single ticks to S1/T3, S2/T1 and S2/T6, nothing really to spoil your enjoyment in listening to this rare disc.
Although this was recorded in ‘68 it was released in the UK in 1969, by which time monos were on their way out, hence the scarcity of this Mono mix. But boy, does this style of music sound better in mono!
