Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle marks minuscule. Another from the collection of barely played records I have been offering lately.

Rarity: Moderate, a popular album, less easy to find in this superb condition with full UK only matrixes. Also, the one-owner-from-new included a review of Billy Gibbons heavily customised 33 Ford ‘Eliminator’ featured in the August 1983 ‘Autocar’ magazine. Only the pages relevant to the review with the cover are included. ‘Eliminator’ was only to stay in England at this time for a few brief days to be given a review and workout. What a brilliant piece of ZZ Top memorabilia to go with this legendary album, few, if any will be offered including this 33-year-old magazine review – just look at the pictures of the real car where the famous album’s artwork and title originated. This is a priceless ‘extra’ for the winning bidder and gives the supreme album (for looks and sound) a unique and brilliant look. I consider a copy like this pretty rare.

Brief Info: The eighth ZZ Top album and their most successful commercially, especially in their native American where it sold in vast quantitities. It really captured the mood of the record-buying public with gold, platinum and diamond sales in several countries. Superbly record and no CD version I have ever heard even comes close to matching the original vinyl sound. So-much-so, this copy is now my choice to be played anywhere, I simply had to record this via analogue to disc and it sounds simply stunning recorded from my Linn LP12 Sondek front end, This hardly played copy a superb nigh-on flawless example that could not be missed for this opportunity. I doubt if this record has seen light of day for many years – the cover, disc and inner are all highly impressive as-seen. The one owner’s idea to include the August 1985 review of the ‘Elminator’ custom car was inspired, and now a historic piece of memorabilia for any winning bidder. Not one to lose lightly, this copy will blow you away on any worthy system.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(–): a single unlaminated format with quite shiny coated surfaces. No printing credits, and no reference to foreign countries, this appears a genuine made for the UK market cover. It has the ‘A Lone Wolf Production’ logo and credit. Includes the ‘Eliminator’ graphic inner sleeve. Also the superb ‘Autocar’ 1985 cover and pages reviewing and detailing the legendary Billy Gibbons customised 33 Ford coupe known as ‘Eliminator’.

Cover Front: Fresh, clean and highly attractive, this has been cover-protected and barely aged or blemished. The merest trace of rim impression (being critical), any creasing bordering on minuscule, fine and faint. Very impressive indeed.

Cover Back: If anything, even better.

Top Edge: Straight, one tiny chip only.

Bottom Edge: Again straight, any rub traces minuscule.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with barely any trace of thickening. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression. All text is near perfect, the surface clean and unfaded.

Corners: A tiny tip rub on the bottom right, better than excellent shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A superb all-round example of this classic 1980’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve / Magazine Pages: EXCELLENT(++): an unlined graphic inner, the back side is plain black. Minimal hint of creasing, any handling traces on the revealing black surface minimal and faint. All edges unsplit with no repairs, that a real plus as the record rim has fairly sharp finish. To be clear: the magazine pages are not an official part of the album, but a wonderful piece to include for fans of the ‘Eliminator’ car and the band. Only the relevant pages of the ‘Autocar’ August 1985 magazine are included. Detail and information of the vehicle and the man who customised it with stunning pictures. This will not be seen or offered often and a magnificent piece of memorabilia for this album. All the included pages are in lovely clean uncreased condition.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better. A superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface traces wispy and very faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, hardly anything heard and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. The production is fantastic with depth, warmth and punch – apparently some CD versions were remixed and ‘different’ – certainly none I have heard come close to matching a vinyl copy. Few available ones will outperform this UK pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been very well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
