Description
ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This handsome and still-sealed 3LP box set from Deutsche Grammophon (2709 058, German pressing, white circle label, stereo) features Pinchas Zukerman and Daniel Barenboim’s exalted traversal of Brahms’s complete Sonatas for Violin and Piano, and for Viola and Piano, beautifully recorded at Manhattan Centery, New York in November 1974.
Included are the following works of Brahms:
Violin Sonata No. 1 in G Major Op. 78
Violin Sonata No. 2 in A Major Op. 100
Violin Sonata No. 3 in D minor Op. 108
Viola Sonata No. 1 in F minor Op. 120 No. 1
Viola Sonata No. 2 in E-flat Major Op. 120 No. 2
Scherzo for Violin and Piano in C minor WoO 2 “FAE Sonata”
In his brilliant little book The Life and Death of Classial Music , the wonderful writer and novelist Norman Lebrecht listed Zukerman and Barenboim’s accounts of Brahms’s 2 Viola Sonatas as among his "100 Milestones of the Recorded Century", writing: "Barenboim’s…playing has a nervous, numinous edge to it that provokes in Zukerman so anxious a tone of reassurance that they close the first movement of the F-minor sonata in a tremulous fadeout. The Andante becomes an act of mutual encouragement, taken at a pace that precludes pressure, a refortifying conversation. After that, they start to enjoy themselves, two young men in New York with the world at their feet, oblivious to the perils of mortality. The E-flat major sonata, lovelier and more langorous at first, turns into a race for the finish, a thrilling conclusion to a great composer’s life. The record was produced by Gunther Breest, a future power player in the record industry, and everything about just feels right."
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the still-sealed box is near-MINT. There is a minor ding to the spine, but otherwise the box appears virtually as new – overall, a truly lovely collector’s copy.
The condition of the 3 LPs is MINT throughout. These are prisinte, still-sealed LPs – the ideal collector's copies.
