billy bang's survival ensemble
new york collage
anima 1002
vinyl: exc>m-
sleeve: exc
play grades strong exc>m- w/ some quiet surface noise (played on thorens td 520 w/ shure V15Vx). sleeve is structurally nice, has staining & mild aging. 1st record by now legendary nyc free jazz violinist bang is deeply homestyle, super gritty, tough mid/late '70s lower east side free. recorded wkcr 16 V 1978. ensemble: Billy Bang-vln,poetry,bells,shaker,perc; Bilal Abdur Rahman-ts,ss,bull hn,perc; Henry Warner-as,bells,shaker,perc; William Parker-b; Khuwana Fuller-cga; Rashid Bakr-d. two compositions by bang, two by abdur rahman --who (see photo) wears a keffiyeh & blows shofar! bang throws down a fierce last poets style consciousness rap on "nobody hears the music the same way" that includes "is it the black market gangsters/releasing herbie nichols tapes/never paying him a single dime/while proclaiming that he was great"! absolutely classic cover image of bang, totally great album.
unless noted records are u.s. pressings & visually graded: m-/exc/vg+. unless a record is new i do not use m grade. as a serious collector & audiophile i am frequently disappointed by over-graded records & half-assed packaging on ebay. i grade conservatively & accurately, & package records with real care. see my other listings for jazz, avant-garde, psych, blues, international, private press. multiple item buyers save on shipping. paypal only, payment in full must be received w/ in 72 hours of auction ending, no exceptions. shipping to u.s.a. is by priority or media mail w/ delivery confirmation for every shipment. international buyers pay actual shipping plus $3 handling. buyer assumes all responsibility for postage and uninsured purchases.
