Owen Miller, on the Red Hot Jazz website writes:
"Whitey (Marlin E.) Kaufman was a resident of Lebanon, Pennsylvania, one of the southeastern Pennsylvania counties that is part of what is called the "Pennsylvania Dutch" area. While attending nearby Lebanon Valley College (in Annville) he formed a dance band that in the early 1920s went on to become Victor recording artists. Trading on this celebrity and well-earned reputation for musicianship and entertaining acts, the 11-piece band landed many bookings throughout the country. Newspaper clippings include ads and articles confirming appearances at a variety of settings including hotels, ballrooms, fraternity houses and nightclubs in New York, Miami, Chicago, and on the West Coast. Kaufman maintained the name Pennsylvania Serenaders and organization as an 11 piece outfit through the mid to late 1930s."
