Early 1960s Birmingham Alabama garage band music with a hint of Rockabilly. HYANNIS PORT TWIST seems to be on here (in some ways, it's the weaker - musically - of the 2 sides) to ride the coat-tails of President Kennedy's election and presidency which would date the record ca. 1960-1963. A mention on Google or on YouTube seems to indicate that Purdy was 15 years old when he made this record. THE WEED has been uploaded to YouTube several times and this CIGARETTE themed song seems to have a cult following - perhaps because of the title (but the lyrics refer to cigarettes). Cigarettes were 15 cents a pack in Birmingham when this came out! The label name almost certainly refers to the Vestavia - Vestavia Hills neighborhood - probably where the band members lived. You can research this a bit on Google and YouTube but no other example is currently offered on ebay. VG+ condition. Some rubbing that does not detract from the music. Moderate surface noise in the first groove or two but that immediately disappears as soon as the LOUD MUSIC starts on each side. Recorded at a high decibel level but it seems to have been carefully done without causing bothersome distortion. Label wear does show the record to have been played a fair number of times. Contemporaneous paper sleeve but it's not original. Record graded by actually listening to both sides with a mono record player. Using Spin Connection's grading policy for 45 rpm records, it would rate VG+. I have been grading records and selling records successfully by mail since 1962. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ (the fine print ...
