Description
One of the greatest recordings ever, an electronic masterpiece, shortwave radio pastoral that travels around the world. One of the greatest lps ever recorded, the perfect complement to the Beatles's White album, the direction that modern music could have gone had Karlheinz stuck at it, the sort of music that makes most modern music and ambient stuff look very dull.Is it classical music, is it even music, is it collage of imaginatively processed sounds?
What is does share with White album is a croupier repeatedly saving 'numero neuf' which John Lennon may well have borrowed.
In brief this is quality and you need it. it was recorded by Stockhausen aided by David Johnson who went on to be involved in the early krautrock band The Can and its earlier incarnation the Inner Space. Both Stockhausen and Johnson can be heard on the record, discussing the record itself. it was recorded in 66-67 but only released in 1969. This is an original 1969 german pressing on Deutsche Grammaphone with the year etched into the run off grooves on all 4 sides.
Please play it on decent equipment as there is 30 minutes of music per side. Also remember that is a short wave radio journey, complete with short wave crackle and distortion, especially at the start of side 1. the crackle is not due to wear or a duff pressing. It is a library copy and I have just played it to confirm the sound quality.
