Description
Essra Mohawk "Primordial Lovers" private issue; label reads 'limited pre-release edition', no record company info, matrix reads: asr1160, no date given. Lp VG/VG+ (surface marks, occasional surface noise, especially first song on side two [annoying]); jacket VG+ (mild corner/edge wear, rubbing). *** Lovely self-released issue of the great second album by this Frank Zappa Mothers of Invention alumnus, aka Sandy Hurvitz, aka Uncle Meat. Yes, this woman IS the fabled Uncle Meat! Her first lp, as Sandy Hurvitz, was titled "Sandy's Album is Here at Last!" and was on Zappa's label. Anyhow, this lp's label states "Produced for Reprise Records by Frazier Mohawk" but this is not on Reprise. Also says "not licensed for broadcast" so I'm guessing the deal with Reprise may have been in jeopardy and Essra wanted to get some copies of the record to friends and family? Frazier Mohawk (aka Barry Friedman) was her husband and of course is famous for his production on records like Nico's "Marble Index," "The Moray Eels Eat the Holy Modal Rounders," etc. Oh, and he helped Steven Stills assemble Buffalo Springfield! Anyhow, this lp is excellent, slightly oddball piano-based rock/pop, with strange tempo shifts and odd arrangements which genuinely keep one on one's toes -- a rare feat for a '60s pop lp. Silkscreened lettering on the front of jacket, and on the back are handwritten poems (in ink) by Essra and someone named Todd Barkan. I bought this near Essra's then-home in the SF bay area, so it's possible that she actually wrote out the poems herself, though I don't know for certain. Fantastically rare and very great outsider psych/pop. Not to be missed for all Essra and Zappa fanatics!
