LP - Poki Records SP-9012 (Stereo) - "NO KRISTO" Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau Featuring ISRAEL KAMAKAWIWOOLE (1976) - Jacket NM with Original Shrink Wrap Still On / Vinyl VG+ (play graded)
This LP is so rare it is almost never offered for sale anywhere - this album was produced by a small record company in Hawaii and had a small press run and very limited distribution. I acquired this from the estate of a couple who had purchased it in Hawaii while vacationing there (and who probably saw the Makaha Sons perform live in a club). This is, I believe, the first recorded music featuring the late Israel Kamakawiwoole, generally considered to be the most influential modern artist in Hawaiian music. His recordings of "Over the Rainbow" and Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World" have set a standard for the beauty of ukulele music that is recognized and loved worldwide. This is a rare opportunity to own the very limited initial recording that Mr. Kamakawiwoole produced, as part of the band which was led by his brother Skippy. Israel Kamakawiwoole, who was 17 years old at the time of this LP's release, is pictured on the front and back of the jacket and is noted in the liner notes.
This record is still covered by the original shrink wrap and has the original price sticker in the upper righthand corner of the shrink. The original plain white inner liner sleeve is intact and in great shape. The jacket is virtually flawless with no splits, no ringwear, no edgewear and no markings of any kind. The labels are Near Mint with no spindle marks. The vinyl looks just about perfect; I played the album and there is some minor surface noise in a couple of places - not enough to detract from the beautiful music but enough to keep me from grading the vinyl as EX to NM. All in all this album represents an incredible piece of musical history for the Islands of Hawaii and beyond.
