The Bessemer Sunset Four (they were sometimes billed as the Bessemer Quartet) was formed in 1925 out of the ashes of the unrecorded Rolling Mill Four. Based out of Jefferson County, ALABAMA, the group consisted of lead singer Dave Brown, tenor Sam Riley, baritone Wash Ivey, and bass singer Pat Gaines. Their wonderful four-part harmonies were a textbook example of the Jubilee-style of gospel singing prevalent through the 1940s, when it gave way to the harder gospel styles of groups like the Soul Stirrers. The Bessemer Sunset Four recorded 27 tracks (three of which were never issued) for Vocalion Records between 1928 and 1930 In a somewhat contemporaneous but NOT original paper sleeve. On the LORD I"M TROUBLED SIDE, there is a 1" dig in a blank introductory groove; it makes the needle jump one groove over but the needle always lands in the next groove JUST BEFORE THE ACTUAL MUSIC STARTS so the dig does NOT affect the music. Moderate surface noise but the singing is still much louder (in a good, undistorted way) than the surface hiss. This side is a respectable and sound V+ with quite decent label showing little wear. Maybe about 35-40% gloss. The VALLEY OF PEACE side is even better with almost unobtrusive surface noise, no scratches to speak of. The recording and the sound definition are really, really good here. 40-50% gloss; the label here is a tad more worn but that would make since because the OTHER side of the record appears to have been played more often, thereby causing more wear to THIS SIDE's label! Using the Spin Connection 78rpm grading scale this would be a solid E- Excellent grade. Neither side shows any appreciable distortion in loud passages. Collectible condition! NOTE: some of my scans may have what appear to be scratches and/or pencil scribbles but in actuality those are scratches on the glass bed of my scanner. Please see the scan of the plain green sheet of paper in order to identify them (though they may appear in the scans pointed or oriented differently than they are on the green paper). _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ (the fine print ...
