A Gathering of Promises is a 1969 lost gem of the psychedelic era. The band had two very strong songwriters in guitarist Rod Prince and bassist Roy Cox, and its use of the twin lead guitars of Prince and Todd Potter matched the skill and innovation of the Allman Brothers, who were using some of the same ideas just a few states away from this Austin-based band. The band’s songcraft and tight harmonies should have put them on the map, but neither "Hot Smoke and Sassafras" nor the LP ever got the exposure they deserved, perhaps because they were on International Records, the regional label that also gave us the Thirteenth Floor Elevators.

So this lone album from the Bubble Puppy is a monumental effort of late 60s hard grooving psychedelia -- and one of very best albums to come out of the original Texas psych scene! Bubbly Puppy deserve to be on the top shelf, too, along side the 13th Floor Elevators, Golden Dawn and Red Krayola. The sound is tight and hard hitting, with trippy lyricism and groovy group harmonies, while the guitars range from cathartic fuzz to some surprisingly pretty melodicism. Not as far out as some of their peers, but the groove is absolutely killer.

CONDITION: The cover: is solid and strong; MINT = very clean, completely well preserved over the last 47 years ... no bends, no split seams, no writing anywhere.
The vinyl: still all glossy, collection copy " EX" (excellent) vastly clear, maybe a few soft stray scuffs, play grade is solid CLEAN! Both 'International Artists' labels are clean!
