Description
"Put It There" describes the relationship Beatle Paul had with his Dad when he was a kid and the elder McCartney saw his son really needed to take a weight off. "Mama's Little Girl" (the b-side before "Same Time Next Year" of side 2) is a complementary song to the title track originally recorded in the Spring of '72, after Linda and Paul's daughter, Stella was born in the Autumn of 1971 - so I can only guess it may have been for her. But it can probably work for a lot of other people too: 'looking like a rag doll, singing like a skylark, growing like a rosebud, picking up a mountain; mama's little girl' it goes. Paulie worked on it a few more times through the '80s, dubbing in clarinet and various percussion elements, such as tambourine, across various years until it was finally done in 1987. Then, they held on to it until it was the perfect b-side for this Dad song. (hmm; I wonder how long McCharmley had "Put It There" lying around before Flowers In The Dirt came out in '89.) I bought this record in February 1990 at one of Greenwich Village's now-dead, once-great record shops. Always stored upright, the disc and the sleeve are both in VG++ condition. A lovely parade of songs this time of year with Mother's Day and Father's Day coming up.
