Disc Tommy James & The Shondells (Sweet Cherry Wine) (Breakaway)
RARE
Americom Corporation manufactured Pocket Discs for a brief period in 1968 and 1969. Americom had licenses from leading record companies for simultaneous release with the 7-Inch 45rpm format for singles at the time. Pocket Disc was a 4-inch diameter, 33 1/3 rpm format and was sold through vending machines solving a major retailing problem of pilferage thus gaining support of mass retailers. Pocket Disc was launched in Seattle/Tacoma and was followed by introduction in Detroit with the Handleman company. The format was named by virtue of a user’s ability to put a pack of them in their pocket and, as they were guaranteed against scratching, this was a huge advantage over the more expensive ‘45.’
