The Starliters Journey with the... Starliters Justice Recording Company (Winston-Salem, NC) LP 124, 1966


One of the more obscure/scarce titles released by this legendary (some would say infamous) "record label". The Starliters were a band of four students at South Stokes High School (I believe in Walnut Cove, NC) - Mike Rogers, Ken Wilkins, Larry Jones and Gary Rogers. The recording is primitive, at best. The performances are priceless for the almost total lack of chops on display (One listen to their version of "Wipe Out" will leave you with a jaw dropped so far you might need help picking it back up.... okay, I'm exaggerating. But this recording is at least on par with The Shaggs for unintentional hilarity). Other notable covers that get the teenage treatment are "Ticket to Ride" by The Beatles and two classics by The Animals - "House of the Rising Sun" and "We Gotta Get Outta This Place". Enough. Here is the description of the actual artifact:

Splitless sleeve has moderate shelf/edge/ring wear with a two inch paper tear on the top edge near the center. Back cover has what appears (and I certainly believe it to be genuine) signature of lead vocalist/guitarist Mike Rogers. Now the sad news. The LP is heat warped, making the opening track on each side unplayable. The last bit of the first track on Side One can be played, but I wouldn't recommend it. The rest of the vinyl plays through without skipping, though there is some "whoomfing" during the beginning of the second track on Side Two. The vinyl has some scuffs and scratches, some of which cause tics and pops (some loud, some quiet). On the whole, though, other than the outside warp that prevents enjoyment of the first tracks as mentioned this is a decent (not great) listening copy. No reserve for this scarce artifact!
