Where to start with this one?
OK...rare soul 45 by Gene Barbour and the Cavaliers (not Gene Barber, as written on the label)...from Dunn, NC and formed in 1963, this group became iconic on the shag / beach club scene. Mentored and managed by Harry Driver, who was generally recognized on the scene in NC and SC as the Godfather of everything beach music and the shag dance, the Cavaliers enjoyed a lot of success opening shows for a number of high profile acts like The Impressions and The Tams. Plus, they gained a huge following in their own right.
This record on Hit, which I think(?) was recorded and pressed in Atlanta, is blessed with two great sides. The Cavaliers cover of "I Dig You Baby" is great...they played it a lot at live performances. "I Need a Love", which is actually a misprint on the label for the actual song on the record "I Need You", is one for the Carolina Beach Music history books. It does not get any better.
