Zolar X – Timeless LP
(Pyramid, 1982)
Condition: -/NM, pressed on clear vinyl which plays noisy. Never released with a cover, instead comes with a clear plastic slipcase (as originally issued) which had to be torn open to extricate the record
Description: Legendary record by this group of demented freaks who dressed up as space aliens and roamed the streets of L.A. in the mid to late 70s. They served as the house band for Rodney’s English Disco. The lp consists of recordings from 1972 to 1980 and was self released by guitarist Ygarr Ygarrist in 1982. Ygarr left Zolar X and ended up playing lead guitar in Rock Bottom And The Spys. This record is impossible to find. This particular copy was bought recently by a local collector at a used bookstore. Unfortunately for Tony, I possess incriminating photos of him at the petting zoo. Alone. You do the math.
“After hearing this album, I thought, wow, this is the missing link between Chrome and The Stooges…it wasn’t just the sound, it was the fact that the songs were really good and memorable as well.” – Jello Biafra.
“Most of the guys were from the Bay area, but they moved down to L.A. and picked up a singer from there. They used to dress in full alien garb every day - even when they went to the grocery. They talked in weird alien-type voices (speaking mostly English, of course). In fact, they wouldn't even break their voice and movement put-ons when they were around us in their apartment. They just lived the whole fantasy 24/7. Now that was dedication to the gimmick. It worked well and they actually got a bit of press and had a few good tunes. I often thought that they should have been picked up by a major label. They would have probably been huge. It worked for Kiss and others. Nobody else was doing an alien rock band.” – Y&T
