SCARCE very early, long rare, exact "Brutkasten" label 2ndpress vinyl ~ a very limited edition that was snapped up immediately by collectors - not to be confused with the inferrior reissue that came much later  ...

Carol Of Harvest is one of the all time delights in the magical realm of 70's electrified psychy-folk-acid-progressives with rapturous female vocals and thrilling atmospheric creative songs...on the level of Mellow Candle, only different....but 'stunningly infectious' in the same.

One of the many German bands to release a single album on a private label and watch it grow into a collector's dream. Carol of Harvest played a dreamy blend of Progressive Rock and Folk with killer female vocals that might be compared with Mellow Candle. The music has the added edge of long arrangements with Moog synth and acid guitar solos. Information on the band members is very hard to find, helping to shroud this hard to find album with an air of mystery.

One of the holy grails in collecting circles with a first pressing valued some significant dollars (eBay sale of an original in April 2007 was $2,700).

Named after Walt Whitman's famed noval, this German quintet came together in 1976, but only managed to release one LP before calling it quits - 1978's self produced "Carol of Harvest". The first issue on the small private Brutkasten label (catalog number 850 0004), reportedly only 200 copies were pressed. The line up consisted of then 16 year old female singer Beate Krause, drummer Robert Hogn, keyboard player Jurgen Kolb, bassist Helmut Reinschlussel, and guitarist Axel Schmierer (who was credited with writing all of the material). The performances are all in English and while Krause had a bit of an accent, it is not enough to distract from the performances.

"Try a Little Bit", 10 minutes of prog folk bliss with more bite than Pentangle or Renaissance could ever hope to muster. Ms Krause's wordless acompaniment that follows the main part of the song is masterfully expressive and harmonious, and the synthesizers, and perhaps mellotron at the finale, provide just the right augmentation to the basic sound. While drums are present on this track, they are kept low and are not needed, so potent is the basic groove. That is the general trend in the album.

The other major highlight is the longest song, the 16 minute anti war reflection called "Put on Your Nightcap" that opens the album with tentative guitar reflections, unrushed and pregnant with promise, accompanied by the sounds of the wind. The structure and manner of buildup is very progressive, with time given to express the lyrical themes and some impressive synthesizer and lead guitar work, mostly played at a slow pace reflecting the ponderous nature of the theme. A second part is slightly more upbeat with more emphasis on the rhythm, and some prominent bass work. The other three original songs from the LP are all shorter and very good, more concise and even so, lesser than the two monsters.

The album manages to carve a feast for the prog fan with an interest in electric folk/prog/psych. An album most band's would kill to have made and a perfect collection for one of those cold and rainy Sunday mornings !
