NM..  Should sound new. Record and cover appear virtually unmarked.

Might be 1 or 2 almost unnoticeable marks. Cover in shrink

VG++ Just a little under near mint will have only a very few surface marks.

Should sound almost NM or not far from it.

VG+   Used but not abused. Will have some audible & visual imperfections.

Any background sound or cover defects should only slightly diminish

your enjoyment unless you are a perfectionist.

VG  Still  enjoyable but there will be quite obvious visual & audible imperfections.

In this condition cover flaws will be noted or pictured.

VG- Same as VG but defects are more pronounced and unless it is a 78 or an old

&/or rare record I personally would find it un-acceptable. Cover flaws will be noted or pictured.

I rarely use ratings under VG-

PLEASE NOTE: eBay does not offer "sealed" as a condition option, hence most eBayers list sealed records as "Mint". This can be misleading as Mint implies perfect. A brand new LP will rarely play perfectly. 
Aside from factory defects or poor quality vinyl, new records that don't play Minty at first might play darn near Mint with a good cleaning. New records often need to be cleaned because they are statically charged & will attract dust etc. Also new records can be contaminated with dust & grit from the factory or even some release agent from the manufacturing process.
