Vinnie Paz, aka Vinnie Pazienza, a moniker he took from a former boxer of the same name, has been in the rap game for a minute so its been a long wait for his solo debut Season of the Assassin.  Glad to say, it doesn’t disappoint.  Part of the collective Army of the Pharaohs, a group he formed with members of Jedi Mind Tricks, the clique’s regular producer Stoupe, and several other well-respected East Coast rap underground MCs, P has always been one of the signature voices in the click.  Here, he shines on his own over tracks that show-off and complement P’s flow in most cases.

This album is underground hip-hop to the fullest with a tinge of modern radio type stuff with sung hooks on various tracks.  The varied, yet largely sample-laden work makes for a great soundscape that has surprising cohesion considering there are 17 different producers used.  Shockingly, long time producer for JDM, Stoupe, someone who Vinnie originally started rapping with, is not present on the production credits.

One needs to bring their thinking cap when listening to this lyrical heat.  Vin doesn’t “dumb it down” for his audience as Hova once alluded to.  Vinnie Paz is one of those east coast rappers begging to be heard.  He is not likely to gain much radio play with this music focusing on dark imagery and depth, but it is the type of album that will please fans and potentially draw open-minded listeners into the fold.  Vinnie Pazienza’s Season of the Assassin has the potential to become an underground classic in due time.
