There have been so few vinyl LPs produced over the last 5 years that you should never pass up the opportunity to upgrade your collection. They're each very limited in their pressings and disappear with extraordinary quickness from the vinyl market. This causes prices to skyrocket because once they are gone, they are gone forever! Don't second-guess yourself with this chance to upgrade your collection because before you know it, the opportunity will have passed forever.

PSYCHEDLIC SOUNDS -

These guys represent the linking bridge between the two genres of garage punk and psychedelic. Did they invent the genre? Who knows - they did it best, plain and simple. The only other psyche album that gives it competition is "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" by Pink Floyd. Roky Erickson doesn't get enough credit, and doesn't get compared to Syd Barrett as much as he ought to. Both had massive drug problems that often brought the great visionaries down. I guess this doesn't happen that often because Roky's stuff is way more accessible. The Elevators also created the greatest breakup song ever, "You're Gonna Miss Me", put to good use in the movie "High Fidelity".

Roky Erickson, Tommy Hall, Stacy Sutherland, Benny Thurman and John Walton came together to form a band in the nexus of 1965 and 1966 in Austin, Texas. Their first meanderings were in Rock and Blues (thus the distinctive jug tooting that is their hallmark), but moved into totally new territory as drugs entered the picture.

Like their contemporaries the Airplane and the Dead, the experimentation with chemicals led to experimentation with music, sound and texture. Roky had already recorded his classic "You're Gonna Miss Me" with his former band the Spades, released on Leland Rogers' International Artists label, and that intro got the Elevators studio time for a complete album. Tommy and Roky had been writing furiously, and the songs they had been honing in the garage and in club and frat gigs emerged whole cloth as a completely new sound, one which profoundly influenced a generation of musicians.

Every song is a stone classic, every one covered by many other bands, but no recording comes close to the original by the Elevators. "Roller Coaster", "Reverberation", "Don't Fall Down", "Thru The Rhythm", "Monkey Island" and the incomparable "Splash 1" are just a few examples of the treasures on this album. Just imagine being a twelve or thirteen year old kid raised on Beatles, Kingston Trios, Dylans and Stones hearing this album for the first time: literally mind-blowing! Buy this and the seond album "Easter Everywhere", which is almost as great.

EASTER EVERYWHERE -

More focused and even more trippy than their first album, "Easter Everywhere" features the 13th Floor Elevators at their best. The songs are eerie, rambling, and potent, so powerful that they overcome the lo-fi production that plagued the Elevators throughout their career. Roky Erickson's vocals are sometimes eerily reminiscent of Robert Plant. This is a heavily psychedelic album and shows a San Francisco influence; at this point in their career the Elevators had played in SF and shared stages with the Jefferson Airplane, among other 60s psych groups.

The difference is that the Elevators mean every word and note. They were really trying to "break on through to the other side," unlike some psych groups who were just in it for the money. As a result "Easter Everywhere" is spookier and edgier than most psychedelia. At times it approaches Syd Barrett territory. Highly recommended.
