Eugen d'Albert was one of Liszt's most important later pupils, along with Sauer and Rosenthal. Sadly many of his recordings are both badly recorded and indifferently played (by the time he recorded he had devoted more time to composition and his technique at the piano had slipped).

That said, a small number of the recordings are successful. This rare Deutsche Gram mophon recording dates from 1916

Eugen d’Albert, the Scottish-born pianist who studied with Liszt. Liszt wrote of him: ‘There was also an artist, an extraordinary pianist, by the name of d’Albert. [Hans] Richter introduced me to him in Vienna last April. Since then he has worked at Weimar, without interruption, under my tutelage Among the young virtuosos from the time of Tausig…I know of no more gifted as well as dazzling talent than d’Albert.’

 Rather a colourful character, he studied at first in London, but without pleasure. ‘I scorn the title English pianist. Unfortunately I studied for a considerable period in that land of fogs, but during that time I learnt absolutely nothing; indeed, had I remained there much longer, I should have gone to utter ruin…’

Eugen d’Albert made his home in Germany. On the personal side, he was married six times; professionally he turned to composition, and many later piano recordings lack polish. He suceeded Joachim as director of the Berlin Hochschule fur Musik.

Condition: Excellent rare scuffs, Mozart is E- w few short lightest scratches. Plays very quiet with a few ticks on Mozart.

EUGEN dALBERT (1864-1932)
Scottish-born German pianist and composer

Eugen dAlbert was one of a golden crop of late students of Franz Liszt. He might have been the best, Liszt admired him greatly and called him "The young Tausig ," a formidable pianist, and perhaps Liszt's greatest pupil from a generation earlier.

Eugen dAlbert was born in Scotland but in his late teens won a Scholarship to study in Austria. He then went on to Germany to study with Liszt. He felt strongly drawn to German culture, turned his back on his British background and became a German citizen. He pursued a career as a concert pianist and as a composer, going on to write some 21 operas, and numerous other works including two piano concerti, a cello concerto, and a very impressive Sonata for piano.

I mention here, as a curiosity, that Eugen dAlbert was married 6 times. His first wife was the spectacular Venezuelan pianist, Teresa Carreño. The pair was the subject of a famous joke: "Come quick! Your children and my children are quarreling again with our children!".

The only works offered of dAlbert playing his own music are in this piano roll of an improvisation on airs from his opera Tiefland and a 1912 performance of his Scherzo from Op 16 which you will find below coupled with a performance by Earl Wild which was recorded in 1969. There are also several performances of dAlbert's transcriptions of the music of others.

As you can see from my feedback, I try hard to earn your POSITIVE FEEDBACK and FIVE STAR RATINGS.

Quick note on grading:

The Grade (Excellent to Fair, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately

When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to F), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise.
"SUPERQUIET" is basically noiseless, like a vinyl pressing.
"VERY QUIET" is an exceptionally quiet record for a given pressing.
"Quiet" is a record that is a great example without undue noise for a give pressing.

These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment.

Records will be packed safely between corrugated cardboard in a sturdy box with plenty of padding for safe shipment.

Shipment is usually Media Mail, unless another service is requested. Shipping is at your risk, I will be happy to insure items at your cost.

I charge actual postage plus a small fee for packing materials

As always, I guarantee your satisfaction. If you don't like the item, just return it, and I will refund the full purchase price.

Prices below are for regular 78 rpm records. Up to about 5 records, I will ship Edison Discs for the same rates. Albums from Album Sets count as 1 record. Above that and for international shipments, it will be actual weight plus a small packing charge (1-3$ depending on size of shipment)

1 record: 4.50 – 5.00$

2 records: 5.75$

5 records: 7.50$

10 records: 9.50$

MANY MORE RECORDS: Don't worry. I safely ship 40 - 50 pounds of records double boxed in moving boxes, and even then Media Mail will probably not exceed 30$.
