I AIN'T SKEERED OF WORK is labeled as a Comedy Minstrel. It's about 2/3 comic sketch and about 1/3 quartette singing with a blues like feel to the music.
DARKTOWN CAMP MEETING is also labeled as a Comedy Minstrel. This one is about 40% comic sketch and about 60% music - and the music here has a black gospel quartette sound to it with wonderfully piercing occasional shouts of "Hallelujah!" and such.
Though the word minstrel is associated most of the time with white groups wearing black face, in this case it is an authentic African American group of men including great jazz & blues composer PERRY BRADFORD who was born in Montgomery Alabama in 1893. One of the earliest releases in Columbia's legendary 14000 "race record" series. The date here would be 1923.
There is one other original of this record listed on ebay - mine is more expensive but mine truly appears to be in much better condition - especially if one compares the labels between the two listings.
Record will be shipped via MEDIA mail with the record protected by and cushioned between sturdy pieces of corrugated board; record also in a plastic sleeve (in addition to the UNORIGINAL 1940s 78 sleeve which comes with it) to protect against moisture; plus protected by bubblewrap within the box. I've been successfully shipping 78rpm records since 1962.
CONDITION (PLEASE READ CAREFULLY): Record graded by actually listening to both sides with mono record player. Using Spin Connection grading scale for 78s, it would rate E- on both sides - both aurally & visually. NO DIGS, SKIPS, CRACKS, MAJOR SCRATCHES. NOT WARPED. There's about 50-60% gloss on both sides. Columbia used good quality shellac & surface noise is fairly low for most of both sides but DOES GET NOISIER for about the last 15-20 seconds of DARKTOWN CAMP MEETING. You can see the "graying" of that area when looking at the record. Labels, though they do show "spindling" (from old record player spindle when record was situated on the turntables) they are much cleaner & brighter than the only other original listed on ebay. You can hear the talking, joke-telling, hollering & singing quite well except, as I mentioned, the last 15-20 seconds of DARKTOWN when the surface noise approaches the music level. I've been grading, selling & shipping 78 rpm records successfully by mail since 1962 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . WITH LATER NON-ORIGINAL SLEEVE.
NOTE: Even though it is still used by the United Negro College Fund and by organizations honoring black baseball players from the days before integration in sports, I know some people who buy on ebay consider the term "Negro" outdated and possibly even stereotypical as I have gotten 1 or 2 emails to that effect in the past. But in my 17 years' experience on here it appears that most people (even MANY black people who seriously collect black lit & history as well as the old, ORIGINAL stereotyped material) - prefer it for titles because it makes for so much easier searching than the term "Black" and because there is rarely room in the title for the lengthier term "African-American." (Ebay only allows sellers a very limited number of letters & numbers for the title). _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ (the fine print ...
