The GERMAN Department store Early Electric LONG PLAYING 20 cm DERBY Record was a blow to the Retail record stores, inflicted by the Record Industry:

Different from the US, where companies like Sears and Montgomery Ward had "custom" store label pressings, the early electric Derby Record was produced by a consortium of German record producers, in the cheaper 20 cm format and anonymous performers, and they were sold through German department stores, quite in competition with the Record Retailers, who were - understandably very upset about the whole thing.

Though anonymous, these Derby records have great performances in execellent recording and pressing quality, and great performers, though they are anonymous or pseudonyms

By the pseudonymous KARKOFF ORCHESTRA here identified as Orchester Otto Dobrindt with Vocals by Jewish German tenor John Henrik who here imitates Richard Tauber

Hendrik was a popular German Revue and Movie Tenor, who as late as 1933 recorded the Juedische Tango "Ich hab kein Heimatland" with the Marek Weber Orch. Emgrated to England, and made very few classical LPs post war.

Derby was a cheap mini-record production of dance records during the golden years of German dance bands (c. 1925-1933) and for the fiscal reasons, the name “Karkoff-Orchester” was often used on labels to hide true performers (who were usually the most prominent Berlin dance bands of the era, such as Paul Godwin, Efim Schachmeister, Dajos Bela, Ben Berlin etc.).

 Derby records were cheap and small 20 cm diameter, light-blue labelled German "records to dance", which in late 1920s/early 1930 flooded German market, having emerged in 1920s from the brown-label 25 cm and much less popular Derby records production. Derby "house band" was a mysterious Karkoff-Orchester, which appears on most sides as either the name of an actually existing dance orchestra directed by one Mr Karkoff (that's what some sources claim) or rather being (- what seems closer to the truth) a legal trick to cover various orchestras that were active in Berlin during last years of the Weimar Republic.

The Grade (Excellent to Poor, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately

When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to P), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise.
"SUPERQUIET" is basically noiseless, like a vinyl pressing.
"VERY QUIET" is an exceptionally quiet record for a given pressing.
"Quiet" is a record that is a great example without undue noise for a give pressing.

These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment.
