Description

   Hello again, fellow 78 buffs.  I'm back after a three-year hiatus (just got laid off again !) with numerous lots of ten-each 1920's jazz and dance band 78's, along with some interesting singles I'll be listing over the next couple of weeks.  There'll be at least some occasional jazz and scarce label items mixed into the multi-lots, and some nice jazz, blues, and hillbilly single listings, so be sure to scan them thoroughly to ensure that you don't miss out on something you need for your collection.  Please bear with my sometimes lengthy item descriptions; I love these old records, and this is about the only place I get to talk about them !  I'll have the shipping total after the auction concludes (depending on combined shipping and/or your election of either Priority or Media Rate shipment),  but I promise I'll keep shipping at no more than actual cost to us.

    DOWN HOME RAG / THE DIXIELAND BAND: BENNY GOODMAN AND HIS ORCHESTRA, on EE- Columbia 3033-D, both recorded 15 Jan. 1935 in New York.  Wow !  First side is a flagwaver and a half !  The second side is slightly more relaxed, with a vocal by Helen Ward.  The music plays mostly strongly and clearly over light surface noise, but there are times when the music seems to fade down in amplitude a little; there's a space on the first side where it comes back briefly (and a little startlingly) at full amplitude before winking back out again.  Not that the rest of the side is not enjoyable - but after that episode, you're left wondering why the rest of it couldn't sound that strong and clear.  At first I thought my stylus might be goofing, but it did the same thing every time at that point.  A drunken engineer ?  (Maybe some BG experts are laughing at me right now, having been over this ground before.) The second side is a tad weaker and fuzzier in places than you'd expect from visual inspection.  (Or maybe I do need a new stylus !)  Still, an enjoyable early Benny Goodman record.  The labels are in very good condition.  Docks 6th Ed."E" value would be 20-30.
