Description

This is a really very interesting and quite rare original first issue, 1959 Volume One, Number One edition of the short-lived publication "ECHO, A MAGAZINE OF SIGHT AND SOUND", which in this case included 5 long-playing picture disc records featuring the diverse talents of Mike Nichols & Elaine May, Fred Astaire, James Thurber, Larry Adler, Gypsy Rose Lee, and Alexander King, so a very hip sampling of some of the era's best comics, dancers, harmonica playing musicians, humorists, and even a famous stripper, with accompanying artwork from the always funny and satiric Jules Feiffer, and incidental drawings from artist Joe Bertelli, an essay from jazz journalist and author Nat Hentoff with the record of the amazing Fred Astaire dancing to Jazz at the Philharmonic, James Thurber writing on Adler, and great lyricist Jule Styne interviewing the famous and flamboyant ecdysiast Lee....there are 32 pages plus stiff card covers, and the binding is of a red plastic comb style similar to spiral binding, with the magazine measuring approximately 7 1/2" by 8" overall, and in generally very good condition throughout, the records appearing virtually unplayed, and the only wear to the cover edges, a bit of minor nicking and chipping along the edges with a couple of light creases and some wear here and there around some of the punched holes in the pages, and along the interior to a couple of pages where the plastic comb is holding very well throughout, but a couple of pages show slight wear at the perforations along the binding, nothing very serious however, and all in all it is a very nice and good-lucking copy of this rarity, which also includes a page of previews of up-coming issues in the same flexi-disc picture disc style format, with the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot, Pablo Picasso, Maurice Chevalier, Sidney Poitier, and France Nuyen to be featured...this is part of a series of rare collectibles and antique items, rare recordings, vintage magazines and bulletins, and other items of ephemera including vintage photographs, programs, and rare and unusual books and magazines relating to Fashion, Hollywood Memorabilia, Natural History, Science, Geology, Art, Aviation, and other subjects of great interest (take your pick), that I'll be listing over the next couple of weeks at whipplesbooks on ebay.
