Description
For auction in this instance is an incredibly rare plastic "Tommy Steele" toy guitar, made by the English toy manufacturer "Selcol Products Ltd", around 1959 ( see relevant photo of page from 1959 catalogue ). This is the only example I have seen of this guitar in more than 25 years of toy collecting.
The guitar measures approximately 21" in length x 6.25" at its widest point. Regarding condition and starting with the front of the guitar, this is overall in "Very Good plus" to "Near Excellent" condition ( 7.5 to 8/10 - see relevant photos ).
The paper artwork showing the large picture of Tommy Steele has some bubbling in parts but is also in "Very Good plus" to "Near Excellent" condition. As for the paper label/artwork at the top of the guitar, this has some light "rubbing" to the top of it but is otherwise "Very Good". The sides and rear of the the guitar's "neck" are in "Excellent" ( 8/10 ) condition. Regarding the back of the toy, the guitar's sound box has a 4.5" split to the bottom section, as well as various fine scratches and scuff marks, none of these faults, however, seriously detract from the overall "great" condition of this 56 year old toy.
The guitar appears to have its original colourful strings and none of the 4 tension pegs are damaged. The statement "Made in Selcol England" appears inside the guitar, on the back of the sound box.
Regarding the condition of the box, this has 2 tears to the main side flap and 2 tears to the smaller end flap. Also, there is a piece of "old" sellotape to the top of the guitar box and 2" x 0.4" loss of artwork to the last "e" in the name "Steele", to the top of the box. There is also a 1.25" glued closed tear to the left hand side of the box top ( see appropriate photo ).
Finally, someone had crayoned "1960" in the white area showing the 2 young dancers, but this has since been neatly rubbed out partly, leaving a faint image. Given the faults described, I would describe the overall condition of the box as being "Fair" ( 4.5/10 ).
Please note that whilst 2 of the photos show the front of the 1959 "Selcol" catalogue, and part of the page illustrating the Tommy Steele guitar, the 1959 catalogue is Not Included in this auction, but I will provide photocopies of the same 2 pages.
Please email me with any questions you may have and consider the photos as part of the toy's description.
