This week I am offering some superb condition original and / or best pressings of jazz lps, and will list more if the response is good.
1959 first issue on UK Esquire is this BABS GONZALEZ ten incher entitled "VOILA THE PREACHER" (20-097). First non US press. Les Spann, Charlie Rouse (a revelation on Dolphy esque Bass clarinet), Johnny Griffin, Horace Parlan (it says Pyland on the labels, but if you google Horace Pyland it only mentions this lp, so I am 99% this is Parlan), Ray Crawford, Peck Morrison, Roy Haynes & The Modern Sounds (backing to 2 tracks)
7 TRACKS INCLUDE THE PREACHER, A NIGHT IN TUNISIA (with words by Babs), MOVIN' AND GROOVIN', LULLABY OF THE DOOMED
See the pristine state of the labels, those pics are not lying, its like the day it was pressed 58 years ago!. I could not resist hearing it throughout, as it was fascinating. Gonzales was obviously very enthusiastic about bebop, as many of his words he wrote to the tunes here are a love song to it. Despite the latin sounding name, he was African American, born Lee Brown (apparently using the fake name to get around segregation in hotels on tour, saying he was Mexican), getting most of his fame for writing the tune Dizzy Gillespie made famous, Oop Pop pa dah. I am pretty sure we never hear that band ever again on record.
Record Grading: Near Mint, played near mint with a good Ortofon mono cart. Plain card archival poly lined sleeve.
