1961 The Supremes 1st 45 rpm I Want A Guy Tamla DJ Copy
1961 The Supremes "I Want A Guy/Never Again" 45 rpm single (Tamla T-54038). Incredibly rare D.J. copy of The Supremes first record. Berry Gordy signed them in January of '61 & the record was released in April. They had just changed their name from The Primettes to The Supremes. This is an advance "D.J. Copies" and contains a written date in pencil on the "A" side of "3-18-61". This is also the much rarer "lines" label version. To give an idea of how early this was for the group, then 4 girls (Diana Ross, Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, & Barbara Martin), things were going so badly with the poor sales of their early records, that by the middle of 1962, Diana Ross took a job in a cafeteria of Hudson's Department store in Detroit and Barbara Martin left to get married. Labels grade VG+ to VG++. Vinyl on both sides grades a 7 out of 10 (VG++ or Excellent) as measured by GRT grading standard (see http://www.goodrockintonight.com/gradingstandards.chtml & scroll down to "Grading Standards for 33 RPM, 45 RPM, and 78 RPM Records"). It could well pass as an "8" (Near Mint). Very clean copy!
