PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question. OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In the unlikely instance that you feel the need to open a resolution dispute before working with us, you will immediately be blocked from any further chance to acquire the rare music we present each and every week. Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office. Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has became very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback. We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. RARE ... 1964 =MONO= Original UK pressing -- highly wanted for much good reason!!
First of all a little background on this particular copy. For some 50 years this copy was owned by one AL KOOPER, the famous keyboard/guitarist/songwriter who played with virtually everybody from Bob Dylan's legendary mid '60s songs to the Blues Project and collaborations with mike Bloomfield, Steve Stills and even Jimi Hendrix ... Mr Kooper recently sold his expansive record collection of 50 years. The *funny* part is he signed his name (as ownership) on the back of every one of his albums, this Downliners Sect album included (see photo #2.) So on to the treasure that is... the first blue & black Columbia UK mono printing of the Downliners Sect famous "SECT" album which rivals the Yardbirds, Pretty Things & Rolling Stones...

In their earliest incarnation the Rolling Stones, Yardbirds and the Pretty Things created seminal, ragged but rocking garage-band noise which was raw, sensual, undisciplined and rhythmically driving.
Of all the British r’n’b garage-bands which emerged in the early sixties the Downliners Sect -- a five-piece which formed in London and were arguably one of the earliest British r’n’b bands to establish a live reputation -- delivered a classic debut album: "The Sect" in 1964.
While the Beatles were wanting to hold your hand the Downliners Sect yelped through "I Wanna Put A Tiger in Your Tank," a very different sentiment.
While the Stones were seeking a way into mainstream acceptability, the Downliners Sect’s debut included songs such as "One Ugly Child," and "Baby What’s On Your Mind," plus a couple of suggestively titled and salaciously delivered originals which were based around the simple Bo Diddley riff: "Be A Sect Maniac" and "Sect Appeal."
Kicking off with a ferocious "Hurt By Love," The Sect album establishes its ethos immediately -- it is rough and energetic -- and the follow-up track is "One Ugly Child" which kicks in with a hammered piano riff courtesy of an “anonymous ’great’ who sat in” (as the cover said) with “thanks due to Andrew Loog Oldham for loaning him to us“. This suggested it might have been Rolling Stone Brian Jones. Or maybe it was future Led Zeppelin member John Paul Jones who the following year tinkled the ivories on the Sect song Waiting in Heaven. More likely it was Ian Stewart.
For this impressive debut they tossed in some Chuck Berry covers ("Our Little Rendezvous," "Guitar Boogie" and "Too Much Monkey Business") and their treatment of "Easy Rider," "Bright Lights Big City" and Bo Diddley’s "Cops and Robbers." Terrific all of it.
This was a record which burst with raw energy, was parent-baiting r’n’b rock and owed nothing to the cheerful Merseyside pop music of its day.
All said, the Downliners Sect's greatest achievement was on "The Sect," an album which sounds like a bridge between the early Pretty Things and Stones to Howlin’ Wolf, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley.
It is never too late to be a sect maniac. Jump in.....The deep end won't be out of your depth . . .

CONDITION: The cover: Very fragile & delicate, laminated front cover, rated VG++ there are, per usual with 50+ year old UK/Europe 60s covers, little visual handling crinkles or minor bends (minor) to the lamination, or laminated cover. Nothing bad or extreme, Al Kooper just handled the cover over the years that's all. No rips or tears, the cover remains in generally tidy shape. The back cover has the old style "flap-back" seams, a sure-fire notation of sixties manufacturing. As noted the back cover is signed, guaranteed authentic, by the hand of Al Kooper. Overall still has a fresh appearance -- there are no delete marks, no split seams, and no writing ... obviously VERY collection worthy ...
The vinyl: Rated: play grade : excellent audio, visually: "VG" (+) light scuffs, virtually any surface would be like minor in between tracks, if that, anyway performs for enjoyable listens, over & over if you chose which you might regarding this album! Both UK - blue/silver Columbia labels are clean
